  • New Feature: Better Embedding of Videos.
     OP - April 11, 2010, 02:16 PM

    Hi,

I'm going to install a script I have written which will improve the way videos are embedded. I'm just giving you a forewarning, because I will have to turn off the plug-in which manages this feature right now. So there will be no automatic embedding for a while, until I have installed my code and tested its functionality. Shouldn't take too long. Wink

Also, one thing I hope we will gain from this is a little performance boost. Maybe it will be noticeable, or not. But still, the new script will be worth it.

Thanks for the upgrade. Does this alter the client-side procedure for embedding videos, or does the script you mentioned provide compatibility with a greater number video streaming sites?

It's JavaScript that runs on the client-side (that is on your browser). At the moment only YouTube videos are embedded by the script. Considering that 99% of the videos here are from YouTube, I think that's a tolerable situation atm. Smiley

Ah, thanks for the brief changelog. I agree with you about backend support - most things posted to vimeo, et al, end up getting mirrored to yt for compatibility reasons.

    Np.

Google Video is supported as well now.

This is a video for which I created English and German subtitles a year ago: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=7069012650740485709#

Nice work. I notice yt also recently introduced closed captioning support. Useful for adding translations to videos without having to manually add a subtitle overlay and transcode back into the same (lossy) format with associated decrease in quality.

Nice. Has it broken anything? Any errors in the forum admin or server error logs?
Did the AEVC mod uninstall cleanly via the package manager or did you have to do manual edits?

It's currently showing as uninstalled. If you used the package manager options to uninstall it and didn't get any warnings, then the package zip can safely be deleted because we wont need it again. I have the package manager page open now anyway.

Sorry Aziz, but I just noted a problem with the new embedding.  Its doesnt display the title of the youtube video, until you click on it.

The title is often the most important part of the video, particularly when you are deciding to watch videos in the music/funny youtube video threads, when there is no introduction to the video at all.

Can we allow it to load up the title at least?  If not, then tbh I dont think many will notice that much of a speed difference and prefer it the way it was before..

It's great but it looks like an image until you click on it. Very confusing.

Says "Youtube video" across the top. Shouldn't be all that confusing.

Yes, for YouTube videos a preview image is shown (not for Google videos yet), and the video is not embedded until you click on the image. That's actually a feature. I thought that would be obvious. The purpose is to avoid having 10 or more Flash instances on the same page, because it can slow down some computers and/or make the scrolling of the page sluggish.

So the preview images are a good thing. They load very quickly and the user himself can decide which videos to play. Wink

Okay, one annoying thing might be that you have to click twice until the video plays. I'll see if I can fix that. Edit: Fixed! Smiley

Correction, the title doesnt show at all - not even when you click on the video

So how hard would it be to load the title with the preview image?

Oh and as a bonus, with this new setup there is no restriction on the number of embedded vids per page, because there is no concern about Flash overload crashing people's browsers.. Afro

I'm sorry, but it's not possible to load the title as well (fetching documents from other domains is technically haram). The Flash player usually connects to YouTube and displays a preview image and also the title. But my script shows a preview image first and when it's clicked the video starts playing immediately. So you can't see the title of video at all, unless you let the video play till the end.

I could include a setting (stored in the cookies) that embeds all videos on the page. Maybe I'll implement that, let's see.

If you pause the vid the title shows.

Actually I liked it better before the "two click bug" was fixed. The advantage was that to see the title you didn't have to pause the vid after it started playing. One click loaded the flash player (including the title) and the second started the thing buffering and playing if you wanted to continue.

Without the title, the poster would be advised to write an introduction if they would like i to be clicked on - something that more often than not is already repeated on the video title

Ok, if you wish I can do the following: click to load the flash player; double-click to play the video. Smiley

Would be cleaner if it was a profile setting so it didn't have to load the code for it every page.  Wink

It's above the video (preview image). There where it says "YouTube Video:". I'm using a relatively recent HTML5 feature (Web Storage), which all browsers support, including IE8. If you still can't see it, that means IE[8] is wasting our time again and somebody nice needs to give me error messages, so I can see where the problem lies. Wink
