  • How large was the group of humans that we've descended from?
     OP - February 28, 2010, 08:02 PM

A child would have problems with the Adam and Eve story, with the two brothers and two sisters, or whatever explanation there is in the Abrahamic tradition. There are just too few people involved. I think the species would die out pretty quick.

But how many people where there in the first Homo Sapiens group?

Is the Out of Africa theory a valid one? That explains how we spread, but what I'm interested is the first initial group and perhaps the evolution to the Homo Sapiens.

If i remember correctly, at one point in history, some tenthousends of years, or even hundred thousends of years ago, the last humans remeaining on earth were around 5000 people in the ethiopian region.

Every human alive today is a descendent (did i write this correct?) from those 5000.

    @Islame

Yupp. Might have to see it again though. I was wondering if there were any other theories?

But the real question is the group that we started off from. I mean, was the spread incestuous?

    Do you mean this:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toba_catastrophe_theory

Genetic evidence suggests that all humans alive today, despite apparent variety, are descended from a very small population, perhaps between 1,000 to 10,000 breeding pairs about 70,000 years ago.

btw has anybody thought about checking their genetic history?

I will most likely do it sometime in the future, hope its worth it though

Yep, the problem is that we dont know very much from 200k years ago. I would like to hear more of supposed theories from evolutinists & atheists though.  Problem is they tend to only deal with facts, and dont like to speculate their theist do with their "facts", so there is v. little in this domain.  But if you do find something, please follow it up here- its a subject that fascinates me too

Not necessarily, we might still have been able to reproduce with 'the others' as we were only one generation away..  But yeah, it could have been incestuous too.  Not sure if we could every know for sure..

Seems awesome. Looking back, was it worth it?

The NG one collects more data as they collect more information, so you can always learn more.

Without a doubt - I know where my genes came from and the distant history of me & my lineage. Something that my kids and their kids will probably forever pass on now..

I read though that read rather quick, but it wasn't clear where your ancestry was from? And what was the total cost?

Also what's the difference between the paternal and maternal? Which one did you choose and why?

It was less than £100 but cant remember exactly - should be on the link of the company I used or at the beginning of the thread.. paternal is through your male linerage, maternal is through your female lineage.. male lineage tends to come from further afield with a wider geographical coverage, as it tends to cover the conquerors/ travellers/ explorers on horseback from distant lands.. I recommend reading the thread in more detail to get a better understanding...

Thank god the nazis didnt have the means to analyse ancestry this specific!

Why not?  If they fully understood it, they would have recognised that even Aryans came from the fertile Arab plains, and prior to that Africa!

As we all know, fanatics tend to ignore the facts they dont like, and push the ones they do like...
