  • Accessing this site on your phone?
     OP - February 18, 2010, 07:19 PM

I was wonder whether this site accessible using your phone? I cant seem to view it on mine, it's all blank apart from a little bit of text at the top. I swear Berbs has used this on her phone so I'm not sure what my problem is.

    What phone are you using?

I have a blackberry and it works on that, I know it works on the Iphone, and I used to have the LGviewty, and it worked on that one.

No images, just the sub forums and threads in text form.

I have a Samsung Genio Slide. Wouldn't think there would be a problem considering it works on all those phones, might try downloading another browser and see if that fixes it.

I frequently access this site using my phone and it works fine.

    Have you tried Opera Mini?

Works fine for me too - Ive got a sony ericcsson business phone (p1i) which is a good compromise between practicality, usuability and functionality Wink

I'm thinking of styling up a mobile theme. The standard WAP interface is fine for the old dumbphones but for the newer stuff you can get something much nicer that still works well.

    That would be cool Afro

I'll play on my phone tomorrow and install opera.

Need to find a cheap unlocking place now. Vodaphone does it for £20, this phone doesn't seem to be too popular as it's still newish so cant find many sites that unlock it.

eBay might be worth a try: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Unlock-Code-For-UK-Vodafone-Samsung-Genio-Slide-B5310_W0QQitemZ260550099806QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Local_Services_Other_Local_Services_ET?hash=item3ca9ff035e
Its £14.99, instant unlock (you send them your IMEI, they reply with unlock code) + they have very good feedback - 99.3% with over 3000 feedbacks in total.

Don't wanna use that vendor, the buy now link takes you outside of ebay. For a fiver more I can use someone trustable and legit, think I'd rather do that. The guy at Vodaphone said there are cheaper places to get it unlocked so I might ask him, otherwise I'll just ask Voda.

I'm buying a turbo sim that lets me unlock the phone without tampering with it (it basically tricks it). Lets hope it works, they are quite cheap to buy!

Any recommendations for mobile versions of the site? I've been using the /wap2 version and it's fine, just text, but it lacks useful things like quote reply and post timestamps and stuff. I can get to the regular site on my browser but it's a lot to scroll through. Are you guys just using the normal version on your phones?

Lol I missed the whole second page. Os, a mobile theme would be awesome. From my phone I can't see how long ago you posted that, so this may be old news as far as I know. Do we have one yet?

No, it's not that old of a post so it's still a work in progress/to be done.  Smiley

Now I'm on a regular computer and this thread is only one page, but it's 3 on my phone, haha. So yeah, I need a better phone version. Maybe I'll just suck it up with the full version.

Os, I can help with making a mobile theme if you like Smiley

Bleh. Me and my big mouth.  Cheesy

Yokay, it's a very good idea. There is a much better mobile theme available for smartphones for SMF 2.0 (in fact there are a couple of them) but they don't work with 1.1.x. Shouldn't be hard to make something though.

First thing is to decide what templates it should have. It would be a hell of a job to include all of them since there are forty three of them, and that's before we even get into the additional ones related to the portal/CMS.

My thinking is that we should drop admin and profile functions, as well as all the portal blocks, and just have something fairly basic that covers the forum content itself plus the search function.

Or we could just say the hell with it and upgrade to SMF 2.0 as soon as the RC3 version is released, which I happen to know will be very soon. That has no known security holes and very few browser bugs, plus some useful added functionality compared to the 1.1.11 version we are running now.

Well that sounds like a good plan, especially if they already have what we need. Will it be much of a pain to upgrade?

A bit of a pain but not that bad. I was planning on doing it at some point anyway. I just wanted them to get something fairly stable released before going ahead. The earlier release candidates and betas were a bit too buggy for my liking.

I use the normal version. i prefer to see what the site actualy looks like. my phone renders the pages quite well

These are the ones available for 2.0:

    1/ Curve Mobile: http://custom.simplemachines.org/themes/index.php?lemma=2035

    2/ SMF 4 iPhone: http://www.farfromperfection.com/smf4iphone.html

Either of them can easily be re-styled to tart them up a bit.

Those both look really good. I have used the normal version on my phone and it looks ok, it just requires a lot of scrolling. I prefer the text version because it's fast, but then I lose a lot of functionality. A happy medium would be nice Smiley

This is what I am (still) getting on my phone:

    HTC Hero
    Android 1.6
    Dolphin 2.0

There is one more thing. I have noticed that when people browse this forum on their phones there is a phone icon next to the title of the thread that indicates that they are actually browsing via a phone.
That doesn’t apply in my case. It’s not really an issue, just curious.

Yes that's how it looks on mine, too, Android 1.5. I just move over the right side, no big deal. But even with just the right half, you still need a lot of scrolling to navigate.

That's an interesting bug. I'll take a look at the css as I can probably fix that one quite easily. I've seen similar things before.

Try clearing your cache and forcing a reload now.

Oh and you can collapse the side column the holds the shoutbox, etc if you want to.

Any ideas regarding the missing phone icon in the thread title?
