  • Permanent solution for the Unicode problem
     OP - February 12, 2010, 06:19 PM

    Edit2: The solution is working and is enabled now. Reply to this thread if it doesn't work for you.

    Hey everybody,

    I've become tired of this stupid issue and therefore decided to solve this at the server side once and for all. It's actually solved now, but first I want you to test my solution, so that I can be sure that no browser has problems with it.

    So please, post something here (like äöü) and enter this URL in your address bar before you send your posting:

    javascript:useUnicode=true;void(0);

    Edit1: Note: Okay, let's forget the JavaScript URL. Crappy Safari browser doesn't even support them. I will just add a checkbox beneath the textarea, which you can check if you want to try the solution out.

    So far successfully tested in: Firefox 3.5.7, Opera 10.10, Internet Explorer 8, Safari 4.0.4

    It actually shouldn't. You also include the 'javascript:' in the URL right?

    Alright, I added a checkbox. That should motivate more people to test my code.

    I get this without pasting anything in the address bar

    Check the checkbox below the textarea and try again. Thanks for testing.

    IsLame, I don't have IE8, so it's difficult for me to determine if my code works at all in that browser. Could you please stick this in the address bar and tell me what you get in the message box?
    javascript:alert("äöü".replace(/[^\x00-\x80]/g,function(m){return"&#"+m.charCodeAt(0)+";"}));
    You should get "äöü"

    testing with the stirling symbol & a random bbc news article

    Quote
    Parents and pupils at a Kent school held a protest to try and stop their head teacher from resigning after a row about the slaughter of a school lamb.

    Andrea Charman taught her final day at Lydd School, but parents and pupils chanted "save our head" at the gates.

    Mrs Charman was criticised in September after sending Marcus the lamb - who had been hand-reared by pupils - to slaughter, despite calls to save him.

    The council said Mrs Charman had resigned for "personal reasons".

    In a statement, Kent County Council said: "The governing body would like to thank Mrs Charman for all her hard work during her time at the school."

    Comedian Paul O'Grady, who lives near Ashford, had offered to buy Marcus.

    Well done Aziz - didnt quite know what you had done as I didnt know what unicode meant.  Looks like it further does more than I expected..

    You can remove (Still testing!) from the Enable Unicode (Still testing!) now  Afro

    Why dont you permanently enable it and remove the box?

    Awesome. One more thing which would be great if possible, would be a 'quote' button showing next to the last post, as it is right now all other posts have a quote button but the last post on every topic is missing that quote button

    Will do that of course. The box won't be necessary then. It will be automatic. Just want to make sure that it works for practically everybody here. Smiley

    Btw, that article seems to contain no Unicode characters. Smiley

    I believe that's a deliberate design decision made by osmanthus. I guess he wants to avoid that people quote the last posting which sometimes contains a lot of text.
