  • What is the most secular & sexually liberal country in the world?
     OP - December 20, 2009, 12:46 PM

Which country is the most liberal, in that the culture is free of B.S taboos against pre-marital sex etc, people are allowed to dress however they like, and religiousness is the lowest? whistling2

good question - it has to be a country in the west but which one is difficult as there is always a trade off - according to irriligious statistics its one of the scan countires i.e.i would say switzerland, sweden, finland or denmark but they can be pretty conservative bunch too

Japan should definitely be on the list, considering they have love hotels where you can go for a few hours and pay through a machine so you and your significant other won't have to see a hotel clerk grin yes

Anyone know about France? I've heard they're pretty liberal, they recently banned (or were thinking about banning) hijaab

Easy one Canada by far, or at least in the major cities. Nordic nations being second. Notice the strong correlation between liberalism and quality of life and economic success.

Why not? have you ever been to Turkey? I have and I can tell you it's surprisingly librial place, for example, you'd have a club right next to a mosque, one size you would get jamaatis going to pray and other-side all the clubbers and women scantly dressed

Don't know, from hearing the news etc, Turkey seems to be a ticking time bomb which can explode any time and the whole country would be islamicized. Or is that an invalid concern?

The French are sexually liberal but that's about it. Aussies ate fairly right wing as are Germans. Turkey is still Muslim and backward.

Pakistan is a good contender, namely the Punjab, with the cat-houses, strip joints, clubs, drugs and rock n roll

yes kingtut, I have. I actually stayed for over 4 years. Although it was long time ago, but I see that a good number of people are still strict Muslims. You remember the story about the apostate Christian-converts who were murdered by Muslim fanatics in one of the Turkish cities? I thought I read about it in one of the threads here somewhere! If you compare Turkey with Arabic countries, then yes it is the most liberal, but if you compare it with the western countries, Americas, or Australia, then it is a very conservative country and not at all liberal.

To be fair many immigrants dress like a paki (i'm allowed to use that term just like black folks can call each other niggas) and can't speak english. Plus sometimes they have a tendency to stare at women like they've never seen one before in their lives...

The hijab is oppressive which is forced on many women by their family, hence I'm glad they ban it and wish other countries would do too. Don't know anything about the wholesale bans though.
  • Re: What is the most liberal country in the world?
     Reply #23 - December 20, 2009, 04:19 PM

The problem with banning hijabs is you may be helping restrict the freedoms of women who's freedoms are already restricted.
  • Re: What is the most liberal country in the world?
     Reply #24 - December 20, 2009, 04:24 PM

Peru, breaking out of hijab will be a very efficient first step for those women to become liberated. If you mean that some women won't be able to come to france because of this, they would just have to go to another country where its allowed

  • Re: What is the most liberal country in the world?

I meant the women already living there would have their freedoms restricted even more by their own families who don't want them to go out without a hijab on.

It might be a bit impractical for them to keep the women at home at all times, don't you think? At the very minimum they'd be allowed to go to uni/college, and this law will only bring them freedom.

Also, if you think about it long-term, even if some women from this generation are forced to give up the hijab, it will mean they will grow up less religious and will give more freedoms to their own daughters when they have kids. The 'i did it so you have to do it too' factor may not be there.

Not really. It's a reality for many women.

You're right about the second point though. I'm still on the fence about this issue as it conflicts with my view of freedom of choice, but this one seems to do more harm then anything else...

First of all, they have not banned hijab, they were talking about banning burqa/niqab-- but they have not yet actually legislated a ban to my knowledge.

Second, what of women who do not have it forced upon them by family? Single converts, for example? You would have the government restrict their religious expression? Nothin liberal about that.

And what of Orthodox Jewish women? Where exactly does the ban on religious dress end?

By wholesale bans, I mean broad, blanket bans on things. Such bans are generally illiberal and authoritarian, and are advocated by/legislated by uncreative, intolerant, impatient and lazy nanny-staters.

ETA: Not all government bans, but I think as a general rule it's true.

    fuck you
