  • The 4th Dimension
     OP - November 11, 2009, 12:52 PM

Just watched this video of Carl Sagan's 4th Dimension explanation and was wondering if anyone has thought about this when viewing the idea of what religious people call god?

Dimensional analogy was used by Edwin Abbott Abbott in the book Flatland, which narrates a story about a square that lives in a two-dimensional world, like the surface of a piece of paper. From the perspective of this square, a three-dimensional being has seemingly god-like powers, such as being able to remove objects from a safe without breaking it open (by moving them across the third dimension), being able to see everything that from the two-dimensional perspective is enclosed behind walls, and remaining completely invisible by standing a few inches away in the third dimension.

By applying dimensional analogy, one can infer that a four-dimensional being would be capable of similar feats from our three-dimensional perspective. Rudy Rucker illustrates this in his novel Spaceland, in which the protagonist encounters four-dimensional beings who demonstrate such powers.

Has anyone read these books, they sound interesting. Even though I'm still trying to grasp the idea of a 4th dimension it makes sense that other than Aliens, maybe 4th Dimensional beings could be God-like to us as we're mere 3 Dimensional...

Well, I read Cosmos by Carl Sagan years ago but I have wondered about the 4th dimension for some time.

IMO we, as humans are spiritual beings who have incarnated onto this physical, 3 dimensional plane in order to learn and evolve.  Once we have evolved beyond this plane, i.e. stop coming back to Earth as mortal beings we move up the ladder to the 4th dimension where more evolved spiritual beings reside and at times these beings try to interact with us here on our plane in what we perceive as supernatual phenomena.

Anyway, that's just my theory based upon my research and my gut feelings.

I know it sounds a bit new agey, but I am definitely not a new age kook!  I just feel that I've been here before and that there is more to our existence than toiling away on Earth.

    Peace!

But a really interesting concept, I was already going to order a set of books, and just added Flatland to the collection.

That sounds weird to me wacko , but you are free to believe it as long as it doesn't involve death penalty for apostasy  Tongue

Yeah, I think it's a good explanation, at least something along those lines. So you obviously believe in reincarnation, and you must have checked out Buddhism? The Tibetan Book of The Dead is an interesting read.

    Ha Ha.

That sounds quite interesting. I don't really believe in reincarnation, but the idea of beings in the 4th dimension is something I'd like to explore. It's hard to imagine it, but then again if we were 2 dimensional it's also be hard to imagine a 3 dimensional world..right? The tesseract doesn't look 4D to me, though it looks strange, or maybe I just don't know how to understand it myself.

In the Balance of probability, if a 4th dimension creature exists, then it will not know about us by as much as we do not know bout a 2-D creature.

Do you know about the 2-D creatures? Do you know where they live? Did you observe them?

    Good point  Afro
I was quite worried religious people will start saying their god is in the 4th dimension or whatever.

But this video excludes 11-dimensional M-theory, which allows for spacetime as an additonal dimension to the current prerequisites in infinity?

We at the Fourth Dimension Defence Leage (FDDL) demand to know what exactly is so bad about the fourth dimension that God wouldn't be hding there.

That isn't 4d, it's just an interpretation (and a pretty bad one at that)

The fourth dimension is about as much about time, as 3d is about depth or the 'z' axis. Its more about movement than time.

In any case where does it say the 4th dimension is not related to time?
