     OP - September 20, 2009, 07:58 AM

In India's Punjab state, with only 793 women for every 1,000 men, the practice of several brothers sharing a wife is growing, a national women's group says.

The National Commission for Women is concerned about the practice -- termed "fraternal polyandry" by sociologists -- which it says is degrading to women, the South China Morning Post reported Friday.

Commission chairwoman Girija Vyas said some women were forced to have sex regularly with up to seven brothers. She said the practice was spreading.

Punjab is the richest province in India, yet it has the lowest female-male ratio due to female abortion and infanticide.

Gurpreet, a 32-year-old woman in Punjab's Mansa district, said she had married the eldest of three brothers, but after she had a son, her husband forced her into a sexual relationship with his younger brothers, including one who was only 16.

Although polyandry is illegal in India, authorities said it is almost impossible to stop it because such marriages are not formalized.

Its predominantly famring industry there as far as I know?  Is that because it is one of the largest? I would have thought Mumbai would have been the richest?

Your right its mostly agricultural state but has been going down in recent years because of spiralling farmer debts and suicides. Its one of the smallest in terms of population and area.Mumbai is the financial capital of india.

Well, Pakistan, Bangladesh aren't any better either. Pakistan has 106 men for 100 women, Bangladesh has 105 men per 100 women(In Bangladesh men outlive women, unlike in even West Bengal where at least women outlive men), as bad some Hindus & Sikhs. Indian Zoroastrians have 95 men per 100 women, although they maybe the richest & most entrepreneurial. Buddhist Sri Lanka, Myanmar -which are in the sub continent also have more women than men in their total populations. Punjab is definitely the worst affected though.

Pakistan & Bangladesh were Buddhist before becoming Muslim-like Sri Lanka, Burma.

Interestingly in the Caucasus, Georgia, Armenia & Albania are at some similar porblem

Your out of context here. In punjab and india the female population has been steadily declining because of female foitecide and preference for more male childrens.pakistan and bangladesh dont have female infanticide problem.

    Really?

    http://blog.taragana.com/n/girls-exposed-to-heroin-addicted-parent-tougher-than-boys-199/

In Pakistan, infant mortality rates of girls are higher than that for boys.

This is another story for you asif, from Bangladesh- a man poured acid through his daughter's throat as he was crazy over having a son.

    http://www.thedailystar.net/newDesign/news-details.php?nid=100568

However, again as I have said, such stuff don't happen in all communities in the sub continent-Sri Lanka has 98 men per 100 women, its Buddhist majority, Burma has 99 men. Indian Zoroastrians, Christians & Buddhists too aren't doing such stuff.

Its also very important to note here that Pakistan has a far higher birthrate than its neighboutd Punjab-Punjab has 2.1 children, Pakistan has 3.6.

Having more children automatically means that you can have at least one son, yet Pakistani girls have such mortality rates, which are unnatural!

Zoroastrians & Sri Lankan Buddhists also have sub replacement birthrates, less than 2 children per women, yet they have more women in their total populations.

If only Pakistan & bangladesh had remained Buddhists, like they were...

Bangladesh doesn't really have a case of killing girls, but then neither does West Bengal.

Ask Pakistanis. Smiley Naturally, sex ratios at birth are between 102 boys to 107 boys per hundred girls, this ratio  varies from country to country & from region to region, without any outside interference whatsoever.

However, all over the world, without exception, baby boys have a significantly higherr infant mortality rate than baby girls do the number of boys start diminishing immediately-this would be true everywhere if baby girls aren't killed or left to die from malnutrition or abandoned etc. Pakistan's sorry state of affairs in that baby girls die more than boys is obviously due to selective infanticide or severe neglect & malnourishment.

Anyway, Pakistan has the highest birthrate in the sub continent-almost 4 children per women, at that rate, most couples would have at least a single boy, the region you gave data Punjab has the worst sex ratios in India & has just two children per women, in general, the sex ratios in Pakistan, despite having a much higher birthrate(which increases the likelihood of at least one son) is as bad as India.

West Bengal despite being Hindu majority & Bangladesh being Muslim majority have about correct sex ratios at birth-in Muslim Bangladesh men actually outlive women, showing how bad the living conditions of women are that they even die earlier, not so in West Bengal. Many Indian states like the North Eastern states, Southern states also have correct ratios at birth.

In fact, in most countries in modernity, there are or should be more women than men in any nation's total population-when this doesn't happen, it can be due to many causes.

Infanticide is one, others are severe neglect, ill treatment throughout life, low allocation of food, medicines etc. As a saying goes, "There are more ways to kill a dog than to hang him."

Muslim nations generally have bad sex ratios, indicating severe neglect & ill treatment of women throughout life. In Europe, all the countries have more women than men-only Turkey & Albania have more men, unsurprisingly both are Muslim.

Turkey has 103 men per 100 women, Albania has 104. Other European nations which are Christian majority has more women than men, due to better treatment of women through life.

In the sub Continent-Indian Christians, Zoroastrians, Sri Lankan Buddhists have more women-indicating that Christian, Buddhists & Zoroastrian communities women are treated well from infancy throughout life, enabling them to outlive & outnumber men.

Afghanistan, Iran etc all have more men than women in their populations.

Do you think this is an skewed sex ratio, thats 2 or 7 more boys than girls right, and now if you read the first post in the thread you will notice that in indian punjab there are 793 women for every 1,000 men.Thats 207 more boys than girls.

No surprise since they kill their children they are likely to have much lower growth rate. Are you arguing that women and girls are safer in india.
According to some estimates some 50 million girls are missing from indian population

Bangladesh doesn't really have a case of killing girls, but then neither does West Bengal.

But then thousands of girls and children are trafficked each year to india from bangladesh

    Ludhiana, October 2
Those who think the problem of a skewed sex ratio is limited to humans only, think again! The problem is as grave among cattle. In fact, more so if one goes by figures. And, the situation surely is alarming in Punjab.

The only difference is that while among humans the number of females is on the decline, among animals it is the other way round. Female cows and buffaloes are given preference over males because of their ability to produce milk and progeny, while large-scale mechanisation in the farm sector and scientific methods of breeding have rendered male animals redundant.

This has led to a drastic fall in the number of male cattle and buffaloes in the state over the last few years.

The problem of a skewed sex ratio among cows and buffaloes is known to have persisted since a long time. But, a startling fact that has come to light is that dairy farmers are in the state are increasingly resorting to killing the male calves. Starving them by denying their share of the mother?s milk and a healthy diet, the dairy farmers manage to ?get rid of the unwanted animals which are nothing but a burden on their resources,? disclosed Dr AK Jain, senior dairy scientist, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU).

Dr Jain further said the figures of male animal versus female in the state were shocking.?During a survey done in the year 2007, there were 17.61 lakh cows in Punjab. Out of which 13.37 lakh were females and just 4.24 lakh males; thus, a sex ratio of 3:1,? he disclosed.

The situation is worse among buffaloes. As the easiest option available to dairy farmers is to send the male buffaloes, even few days? old calves, to slaughter houses to get rid of them. Out of the total 50.01 lakh buffaloes in the state in 2007, 45.19 lakh were females while the number of male buffaloes in the state was a paltry 4.82 lakh in 2007, revealed Dr Jain. The sex ratio of buffaloes in Punjab is 9:1.

?The situation has only worsened over the last two years. Everyday scores of male animals are killed by dairy farmers not only across the state but all over the country,? he remarked. Meanwhile, Dr Sandeep Jain, member, Animal Welfare Board of India, said the authorities were aware of the goings-on but in the absence of any formal complaints, no action can be initiated against the erring individuals.

?However, the accused can be booked under Section 429 of the IPC and Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1960,? he said.
