    Taking fun
      as simply fun
    and earnestness
      in earnest
    shows how thoroughly
      thou none
    of the two
      discernest.

    Men, said the Devil,
    are good to their brothers:
    they don?t want to mend
their own ways, but each other's.

    Everything's either
    concave or -vex,
    so whatever you dream
    will be something with sex.

    Piet Hein

Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.

Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it.

People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought which they seldom use.

A large part of mankind is angry not with the sins, but with the sinners.
A sword never kills anybody; it is a tool in the killer's hand.
Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the rulers as useful.

    Ok this is hilarious:

    Quote
I was walking across a bridge one day, and I saw a man standing on the edge, about to jump off. So I ran over and said "Stop! don't do it!"

        "Why shouldn't I?" he said.

I said, "Well, there's so much to live for!"

        He said, "Like what?"

I said, "Well...are you religious or atheist?"

        He said, "Religious."

I said, "Me too! Are you Christian or Buddhist?"

        He said, "Christian."

I said, "Me too! Are you Catholic or Protestant?"

        He said, "Protestant."

I said, "Me too! Are you Episcopalian or Baptist?"

        He said, "Baptist!"

I said,"Wow! Me too! Are you Baptist Church of God or Baptist Church of the Lord?"

He said, "Baptist Church of God!"

I said, "Me too! Are you original Baptist Church of God, or are you reformed Baptist Church of God?"

He said,"Reformed Baptist Church of God!"

I said, "Me too! Are you reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1879, or reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915?"

He said, "Reformed Baptist Church of God, reformation of 1915!"

I said, "Die, heretic scum", and pushed him off.

I know people don't want to turn atheism into another religion. But I'd gladly be a brownshirt for Dawkins. Ataturk was a militant atheist. Sometimes you have to use force to drag people into the 21st century kicking and screaming.

yeah, I'm not going to mind if they tackle religious bigots and fundamentalists, but they tend to pick on harmless people as well.  They are a bit like the creating a Taliban to fight the USSR.  We all know what happened then.

By the way, was Ataturk an atheist?, I know he did not really like Islam, but I've never heard that he was an atheist.

Ataturk might have been a believer earlier in his life, dunno, but later on he was definitely an atheist:

    Quote
"Islam-this theology of an immoral Arab-is a dead thing. Possibly it might have suited tribes in the desert. It is no good for modern, progressive state. God's revelation! There is no God!"

Actually I'm gonna make that my new signature quote.

Actually I'm gonna make that my new signature quote.

I am surprised he got away with the things he said in a muslim country, and still got away with it to become a respected leader of the country.

I like this quote during the civil unrest from Ataturk,

    Quote
"Our life here is truly hellish. Fortunately, my soldiers are very brave and tougher than the enemy. What is more, their private beliefs make it easier to carry out orders which send them to their death. They see only two supernatural outcomes: victory for the faith or martyrdom. Do you know what the second means? It is to go straight to heaven. There, the houris, God's most beautiful women, will meet them and will satisfy their desires for all eternity. What great happiness!

This is Islam, an absurd theology of an immoral Bedouin, a rotting corpse which poisons our lives.

    - Mustafa Kemal Ataturk (Founder of Modern Turkey)
