     OP - April 23, 2009, 10:11 AM

Hi all. Have come to the site through reading and watching your stuff on the web ( initially found it through RDF ). Hearing people like Maryam speak out is truly inspiring and gives hope that we humans may yet , despite ourselves , find a way of dispensing with the shackles  that so bind us to mental slavery  and so wanted to come over and learn more.
Im an atheist /humanist  of the ex catholic variety , have been posting and lurking on RD.net for a couple of years now , by no means an intellectual heavy-weight  but can hold my own.

Looking forward to learning more from an ex-muslim perspective

    peace out

According to the polls only 1.6 % of Americans are athiests. So what gives you the right to call the other 80% morons?'

Welcome to the forum! yes What made you leave Christianity if I may ask?

Not sure there was a defining moment , from a very young age I just worked out they were talking shite. I guess it was just the hypocrisy and nonsensical voodoo (   god loves you but he will kill you if you  dont believe he loves you  ) .
I just drifted from it.  I did however have the residue unconscious stuff going on , the guilt and the fear of being punished by devils etc . I could rationalise that it was bullshit but deep down it still had a hold of certain parts of my psyche.  The Dawkins , Dennet and Hitchens books  were important to me but not as a way of leaving religion , I had done that years before , it was more a psychological/  therapeutic thing , a map of how to get out of the mindfuck and an immensely welcome  articulation of what I knew already. Those books were also an invaluable source of how to counter the voodoo when ever it turned up in my life. I had freed myself from the bonds of religion but those books and chatting  with other atheists liberated my mind or as old Dicky Dawkins likes to say , I had my conciousness raised.

    peace

Good to have you on board, another humanist!

Knowing Islam is the only true religion we do not allow propagation of any other religion. How can we allow building of churches and temples when their religion is wrong? Thus we will not allow such wrong things in our countries. - Zakir Naik

This was my experience too. I knew at least 10 years ago that I was not Muslim and might have never really believed in all the B.S. But it took a long time for me to discover the works of Dawkins and Hitchens, the 2 who have inspired me the most to take the final step and come out of the closet as an apostate and an atheist. This is why it's important to be out, to inspire others.

The guilt and the last remaining drops of fear (of hell, god, eternal torture etc.) were finally wiped away with the warm kind of ratioality and atheism that is now becoming available to more and more, thanks to authors and speakers like Dawkins and Hitchens, Sam Harris and Maryam Namazie.

Nice to see you here. Cheers.  cheers

Hi Allat . As I said one of the reasons I registered here is to get a perspective from people leaving the chains of Islam /Submission behind .  I am from the UK and can only speak for my experience here but I think in general the consequences of a person leaving the Islamic faith has to be a higher risk affair than of of one leaving the Christian faith. Im sure someone could come up with a few horrific stories from the christian perspective but on the whole I feel I could say quite openly in any company that I am ex christian without fear of anymore than a dissaproving scowl or , Thor forbid , an attempt at saving my soul through trying to explain the bible 'properly' .
On the other hand I would imagine that if I were to have left Islam in the UK  the odds are that I would have to tread carefully in certain situations and that the ramifications for my family and personal relationships would be much greater.
It is for this reason I have nothing but unadulterated admiration for those here who not only have broken the chains but are not afraid to say so publicly. Maryam is one inspirational human being and Im sure there are many others like her.
I imagine there must be many hundreds of people in the UK who just know that its all nonsense , see the hypocrisy of it daily but feel they can say nothing becuase the pressures are too strong. They need to hear ex Muslims speaking out  and letting them know they are not alone.  What you are attempting to achieve has my  upmost respect , admiration and support.
    Save the Humans
    Peace out  Smiley

PS : Are their any books that anyone could recommend  for me on this subject ?  Is there a Muslim equivalent of TGD around ?

We have a resource centre which contains links to many books. Ibn Warraq is an apostate who has written many good books about Islam. I've read the one titled - 'Why I left Islam' and it is was very enlightening.  He is very biased though so be careful of that if you read his stuff.

And you are correct, muslims do find it very difficult to come out. Some of us on this have been lucky and are blessed with open-minded families whilst others here are still hiding. Maryam Namazie is a true inspiration for all yes She has helped many of us here.

From contemporary times, "Infidel" and "The Caged Virgin" both by Ayaan Hirsi Ali are highly recommend.

Peruvian , Allat , thanks for the info and thanks for making me feel welcome.
Just noticed that you are both female ( well Im assuming that  from the  Mistress title in Allats case and the signature in Peruvianskies should be indication enough  Smiley  )  , would it be fair to say that the reason the most ex-muslims I have come accross have been females is that they get a particularly shitty deal out of the faith? Will it take a parallel 'suffragette' or feminist stance to further the cause of both muslim apostasy without fear of reprisals and womens rights ?
Im a great believer that womans rights and human rights are inseparably intertwined in general , what are your takes on it from the islamic angle ?

I would think self-flagellation might be in order as part of the penitence but sentencing yourself to only drink tea is a bit over the top. I mean there's no need to be excessively masochistic.
