    One more thing. Are you logged in as administrator or do you have a limited user account?

    I have an admin account but use a limited user account even though I'm the only one that uses the computer.

    The idea behind this is if something wanted to install itself in the computer then a pop up window will ask you for the admins password. It's happened to once or twice. Should make it difficult for something to sneak itself into your system. Also it will limit the amount of access software has to your system when installed on a limited user account. If something goes wrong you can login as admin and trouble shot your compute or copy over your documents and delete that account and create a new one.

    Again it doesn't help you now but if you have to reset your computer to factory setting then its something to consider.

    I'm in admin mode always so I don't install random pop ups.

    I just installed the service pack 1 thing, apparantly the last time my pc tried to do it, the update failed, back last year lol my pc is set to auto update anyway, but that particular one failed.

    I'm going to download sypbot now.

When logged in as admin they will install without asking you because you are already in admin mode.     Burbles, do not surf the net in admin mode, particularly if you are using Opera rather than Firefox.
    It's warnings aren't as good even though it is very good in other respects.

    The missing service pack is going to be one of your problems I suspect. Being a year out of date for security patches is not a good thing.

    The reason I asked of you had read the help file for Kaspersky is because if you have a legit copy of it they will provide you with backup. You can submit a report on your machine and they'll tell you what is wrong with it.

    Personally I wouldn't turn it off because I've been running Kaspersky, in conjunction with all the latest security patches, for the last two years and it seems to catch everything because I've never had a moment's trouble. You need to keep Kaspersky updated on a daily basis as well as keeping Vista updated. Do not turn off automatic updates for Kaspersky. It should run every time you access the net.

    A registry cleaner is worth running occasionally, as Biax mentioned. I can dig out the link and instructions for the one I use.

    If your brother is still hanging around and surfing porn you can install Sandboxie. This quarantines everything that is downloaded from the net. Nothing gets outside the sandbox unless you go through the contents and specifically move it out. When you clear the sandbox everything in it is thoroughly wiped.

    Ok, I did a spyware sweep with the anti spyware stuff, 109 things needed to go, it's appears to be a tad bit faster now, if not at it's brand new speed lol.

    I have the back up for kapersky cos I did buy it so they sent it in a disc.

    I will do the non admin thing and do the links.

    First I got to do my homework lol which I had all week to do and only just sat down to do now, night before I have to hand it in.  Roll Eyes

    I remember seeing somewhere that you have to do your homework or something. If you are a student then you can get a student discount.

    Also some sites won't work and some services like 4 on demand won't work and setting up a router is a headache. And most games won't work.

    Other then these things it's great.

    That seems fine. Problems with your pc then. Just do what everyone else stated and run a scan. Also it would be better to run the scans in safe mode which you can access by holding down F8 during bootup.

    Is it pretty straight forward?

    Like hit F8, and then an option comes up to let me scan, or do I need to know some jargon and witchcraft?

    It's easy. You get about 3 options about safe mode. Just load the top one but it doesn't really matter much about which one you choose in this case. It loads up Vista but with minimal things running in the background so if you have any viruses/spyware they should hopefully not start up. Easier to remove this way. The screen resolution also goes down to the minimal one so don't be surprised if you have massive icons on your background Tongue

    BerberElla if your PC/laptop is slow while surfing the internet the first thing I would do is unplug all other telephones from their wall sockets before switching on the router and have it connect to your Internet Service Provider.

    I have to do that where I live when switching internet access between my desktop and laptop. It's a hassle but I get a more responsive internet when I do.

    I have a feeling that might be your problem too.

    I doubt it's a virus of some sort. You can always use Microsoft's Safety Scanner by downloading it from their website to check that if you want.

    Yo Burbles, I tested that Sandboxie thing and it's great. You can even download, install and run software inside it, and as soon as you shut it down there's nothing left. Browser runs as normal. Awesome safeguard if you're surfing dodgey sites (or your brother is).

    Just don't let anyone save dodgey content to outside the sandbox.

    Move your documents, photos and the files you need onto an external harddisk or usb-memory stick.

    Format the computer and reinstall windows, copy back your files onto the internal harddisk.

    I takes some time and effort but always works when you have no other option. Smiley
