  • Slow PC?
     OP - January 29, 2009, 08:28 AM

Hah this is staff asking you something, or should I say "just this member of staff lol".

Anyway my PC is beginning to resemble a snail.

I have scanned it umpteen times with a programme called Kapersky, it gives me a list of like 400 upwards vuneribilities but no option to qurantine or delete or disinfect, or if it does I don't know how to use it.

I have used a programme called CCleaner and cleared out temporary internet and whatnot files.

    It's been defragged.

So what else can I do?

I get 10 meg broadband speed and it still takes me donkeys years to go from page to page, let alone stream youtube these days.

This is all a result of my brothers porn surfing, I just know it.  finmad

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

Have you read the Help file that comes with Kaspersky?

You can try Spybot - Search & Destroy. It's free and tends to find most spyware and malware.

Other then that check that your anti-virus definitions are up to date. My sister had Kaspersky and her PC, running Xp, was extremely slow. I uninstalled it and then it seems to be working fine. I ran Spybot and found the usual cookie trackers and nothing more malicious then that. Installed Norton after that and it didn't find anything.

Can you export your anti-virus report as a text file?

If you are in the market for and new anti-virus then I recommend nod32. you can install a trial version and run it and see what it comes up with. Although if you are having problems accessing the net then it might not be much help to you.

Hi Berbs.  I use spy bot sometimes and Norton. BUT, I've been more than satisfied with the free AVG download with Spyware doctor, also free.

Yes.......sort of lol remember that time I posted an image of the issues it found?  well the help file tells me I can do certain things, yet when I try to do them the option doesn't highlight.

For instance when it says quarantine, I click it and it goes to the open a file box, but what file am I supposed to open to quarantine stuff?

And then reinstalled or just kept it uninstalled?

I'm not sure, how do I export a text file?

Norton was terrible for me, my pc slowed down quite a bit, so I went for kapersky and it sped up again, but now my pc is slower than it used to be.

I used to switch it on and it would be ready to use real quick, but now it takes longer to start up the pc.

Ummm would it help if I told you the pc rarely gets switched off, and has only been shut down twice in the last month, so it's running around the clock sometimes, would that damage a pc?

It could be your registry is full of old, partial, or missing references. It will definitely slow your computer down.

Or you might have a root kit installed on your machine, most anti virus programs won't find it. That will eat up system resources.

    I've had both problems.

I use RegscrubXP to look at my registry.

Sophos anti-rootkit to check for rootkits.

Spybot-Search and Destroy saved my old computer twice from crashing. You know when your comp's almost gone and it'd been gone almost twice and it saved it. Third time, we allowed it and bought a new one.  Cheesy

    Stream, dont download.
Go into the control panel disk cleanup and just clean everything. If there's anything there that you dont use, or dont need to use- get rid. Just clean everything down

I do stream lol it's the streaming that's slowed down, I have to buffer tudou and megavideo these days, when they were the fastest before.  finmad

Disk cleanup says there is nothing to clean up.

Yes they are free. CCleaner doesn't clean out the whole registry, which is why a registry cleaner is necessary.

A rootkit is malware which consists of a program (or combination of several programs) designed to hide or obscure the fact that a system has been compromised. Most antivirus programs have problems finding them.

Of course the major problem may be that your OS is Vista.  Roll Eyes

    (Clicky for piccy!)

You don't seem to have vista service pack 1. When you get your PC working you should update it. This would also suggest that your computer doesn't have all the latest patches.

Mine updates automatically. Have uninstalled your anti-virus yet?

You could try to start your computer in safe mode with networking and see if the problem still persists. It wouldn't help you fix it but it will help you identify where the problem is.

How do I start my pc in safe mode and what would I be looking out for?

You don't have to pay for the updates. It should be free.

And the restore disks don't come with the computer if you bought your Vista computer from the shop. It is in on your hard drive in the computer. I think you have the hold down one of the F keys when your computer starts up (also the way you access the safe mode). I think the F key is different for every machine depending on the company that made it.

Should try all the software options before restoring to factory setting. This is the limit to my knowledge. I more used to dealing with graphics apps.

Maybe someone with greater knowledge will come online later.

On the screen that you took the screen shot. On the bottom left hand side it says windows update. Click there.
