Hello, I would like to discuss the exact meaning of ayat 2;118 or qisas.  Please,  I would appreciate the comments of all of you who know about the interpretation of this verse, especially the underlined parts:

    178. " o' you who have faith! retaliation (qisas) is prescribed for you
in the matter of the (unlawfully) murdered:
the freeman for the freeman, the slave for the slave, the female for the female.
but for him who is forgiven somewhat by his (aggrieved religious) brother,
then prosecution (for blood-wit) should be made according to a
fair manner (ma`ruf) and let the payment be made to him with kindliness.
    this is an alleviation from your lord, and a mercy;
so whoever transgresses the limits after this,
he shall have a painful punishment."
    179. " and in (the law of) retaliation there is (saving of) life for you,
    o' people of understanding,
so that you may guard yourselves (against evil)."

If a freeman kills a freeman, than his family can exact revenge by killing that freeman too.
If a slave kills a slave, then the slave will be killed if that is the wish of the master who lost a slave.
The same for the women, but if a freeman kills a woman or a slave, then I believe they don't get punished in equal terms.

Any murder can be solved financially too.

At least that was my understanding of the ayat.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

It does not say people of understanding, it says a word with the meaning of "Heads and Rulers and rich people of a tribe".

A very controversial verse in that it promotes that the heads of the tribe can get a Second chance if they kill.

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"
