Here's an article from the BBC website about it.

Very good program - and moving.

I couldn't help thinking that although some British girls are getting help - many others have no-one to help them.

I watched the program but can't help but think that the ones who debated staying with their new husbands were too immature to know what was good for them.

I think you're right speaklow. But like abused women everywhere, they can't believe that it's always going to stay that bad and they tag along waiting for a change for the better that's not going to happen because in that situation it's them that's supposed to change.

I think the major problem here is the prevaling clan mentality of most South Asians plus the group or herd mentality espoused by Islamic teachings which instruct the believer to sacrifice their own needs for the greater needs of clan and society.

Sadly, it will take generations for this mentality to change and adapt to modern society.

I'm glad that the British and Pakistani authorities are doing something about it though.

What really gets my goat though is the laxity in attendance reporting for schoolchildren in the UK.  In the US, if your child misses school for so many days, no matter what race or religion they belong to, the parents will have the authorities on their doorstep in no time with a warning that if they don't send their child back to school they will have to face the consequences.

I agree, she looked confused and clearly did not want to stay but felt 'honour-bound' - afraid of bringing shame on her parents - these poor girls are often just as caught up in this 'honour' mentality as the men-folk are.

I think it depends what kind of arranged marriage.  Some of them may be called arranged marriages but the pressure is what makes them realistically a forced marriage.

A girl may agree without physical pressure, just the knowledge that this is her only destiny, and to me that is forced.

On the other hand the ones who happily go into an arranged marriage are not forced.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

I agree, and will only add that a great many 'arranged marriages' are little more than 'introductions' and although there may be some pressure - it is NOT the same as being locked up in a room and forced to marry someone.

I'm not necessarily defending arranged marriages - but there is a difference.

There is a difference between forced and arranged marriages, of course!

My mum had a gun held to her head at the age of 15 and was forced to sign the papers, that was forced.

My cousins asked their parents to look for a suitable spouse for them, that was arranged.

Of course there is a difference between arranged and forced marriages but the problem is it can be difficult for anyone outside the immediate family to tell which is which ,and the custom of arranged marriages can provide a smokescreen for a forced marriage .
