  • Epicurus' argument incompatibility of evil
     OP - November 09, 2008, 10:09 AM

I had written an article on this sometime, back and Berbs sig reminded me so I post it up here, I love logical arguments, I have one which is completely independently my own I will post that up sometime.

    Epicurus' argument a little adapted:
    April 18th, 2008, 11:56 am (diary entry)

It's April 18 2008, and I wanted to talk about why god is logically incompatible to the preposition of god. Firstly, we will have a look at the definition of god. God is defined as; A being conceived as the perfect, omnipotent, omniscient originator and ruler of the universe, the principal object of faith and worship in monotheistic religions.

So, god is omnipotent (all powerful), omniscient (all-knowing) and according to religious scriptures is also all merciful. So we have the premise of god here.

1.) If god is all knowledgeable and all powerful. Everything else becomes obsolete. Creating the universe and putting little humans on it all becomes pointless.

2.) If god is all powerful - then he would have had to exist for an infinite amount of time doing nothing until he created the universe. He would have seemingly been suspended in infinite.

3.) If god is all merciful - how do you explain evil? or how do you explain unnecessary evil? this is a really old argument which comes from Epicurus and the time when the Greeks used to be philosophers. If god is omnibenevolent - and he has given us free-will. And created evil for humans as character building. Then how does one explain unnecessary evil. Such as an animal dying in a forest fire. Or a child dying of chronic diarrhea. What are we supposed to learn from this? Or for example, when a tiger or lion hunts and kills is pray humans are not even around the pray has to suffer, how is that teaching us something.

The famous Epicurus argument goes like this:
Is god willing to prevent evil, but not able?
    Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able but not willing?
    Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing?
Then were does evil come from?
Is he neither able nor willing?
    Then why call him god?

Have you reached some conclusion on it that you wanted to share?  because it just seemed like you were repeating and agreeing with the sig, is that true?

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

The conclusion is, the argument based on logic is solid. Moreover I added to it a little, on the infinite aspect, if god is infinite, then by definition he cannot, exist basic mathematics.

So are you saying you don’t believe in god again anymore?

"At 8:47 I do a grenade jump off a ladder."

Then why do you cry when you pray 5 times a day?

"At 8:47 I do a grenade jump off a ladder."
