Is this also the case in Islam, or am I under the wrong impression in assuming that most practicing Muslims at least know their scriptures and their various interpretations and, therefore, can claim a more solid basis in personal knowledge for their beliefs?

    Happy weekend. Neil

I think to some extent your under a wrong impression, there are many Muslims on places like Ummah, Salafitalk, Sunnifourm, Shiachat, who are extremely well verses, in Quran and Arabic.

HB: Knowing the rituals does not constitute understanding islam. Executing the rituals, does not equate understanding of islam. For a non-arab to know how to state some Arabic words like "Insha-alla or Masha-alla or iman or kufr or fiqh or sunna or hudud or hamadnak" that does not constitute understanding of islam.

Using the Arabic words like Inshallah or Mashallah even when you're not Arabic doesn't mean you don't understand the words. People can be multi-lingual you know. Even if you aren't multi-lingual, I'm sure you will know what it means if someone comes up to you and says "Hola" or "Bonjour".

Mashallah and Inshallah are common words used in Islam.

I'm not saying it constitutes understanding Islam, I'm saying that I know people who follow Islam inside out. They practice it by the book, so to speak.

Agreed, specially with the bolded text. But the paragraph is distracting, I do not know how it relates to my earlier point that: "Knowing some Arabic words like Mashallah does not constitute knowledge of islam."

There are Muslims who don't follow the Quran sunnah to sunnah, of course. But there are those who do follow it rule to rule.

    Agree with both.

You say executing the rules does not constitute understanding Islam, so then what does? What does one have to do/say to prove that they do actually understand the religion??

Here is what someone who understands islam will know:
How muhammad was killed. How Ali & Uthman were killed. How many million dirhams did Uthman have in his coffers. How many people were killed in ghazawas attended by muhammad (Number smaller then most). The names and age of most of the wives of muhmmad. The treaties conducted by muhammad. Muhammad refusal to allow his daughter's husband ali to remarry on her. The circumstances under which muhammad was caught committing adultery. The verses he came up with to clear his name. Muhammad stoning of adulterers. The lack of stoning in the koran. The satanic verses. The reason why the stoning verses are missing. How to read & understand koran. Which khalifas permitted alcohol and under what form was it allowed. That Muhammad ordered a mosque burned. How many people were killed in that mosque. How many ghazwas is at least approximate did muhammad condone. How many years was muhammad a prophet for. The rights of the muslim woman in marriage: Being divorced, then being recalled within 3 periods regardless of her wishes. Being recalled into the house of obedience. His rights to beat her. How did muhammad judge in cases where women complained about husbands beating them. Some statistical analysis conducted on the koran and hadith.

Here is what a cult follower of islam will know:
If kneeling more is preferred. What food is makrouh. What are the huddud of drinking alcohol. Which direction to face in the toilet. The length of the pants above the ground. Is a medicine containing traces of alcohol forbidden. The meaning of some cool arabic words. memorize some verses perhaps entire surat. Being able to recite the verses without understanding the meaning. Muhammad is an example to follow.

So there exists muslims who understand islam, but they are very few. Now many of the cult followers of islam will spend years trying to understand islam, and for those islam has plenty of material to keep them busy and occupied and turn in circles without ever learning what they set out to learn. And you always have to ask yourself this question, why does it take them so many years of studying islam? What is so damn hard to understand? Are they that dissatisfied with what they understood so far, that they have to keep spending years and years?

"Ask the slave girl; she will tell you the truth.' So the Apostle called Burayra to ask her. Ali got up and gave her a violent beating first, saying, 'Tell the Apostle the truth.'"

Well I know the answers to many of the things in both of your paragraphs, according to one mazhab or another at least.  So did many of the Muslims I called friends.  Almost all of them remain Muslims.

Why so many years? Because there are so many thousands of diverging opinions, arcane rulings and things to nitpick over. Sort of like the Orthodox Jews.  Or any one else who pursues 'scholarship' of a religion.
