    Yes all non-sticky topics that haven't had any posts for a few days have disappeared. I know about it and I'll fix it.

    Before anyone starts speculating about us being hacked by al Qaeda I'll admit to the problem being caused by operator error. IOW, I pushed the wrong button. Said button has been deleted from the admin centre template to prevent future admins-in-training from making the same error.

    I have a complete that is only four days old. I also have a backup of all sticky threads and all threads that have been active in the last three days, as well as all the forum structure and articles, etc that you can see. What I want to do is import the full backup without losing the content we currently have available. This will still mean a gap of one day in some topics and it isn't possible to get around that.

    Before doing anything else dangerous I want to consult with a few people and make sure the process is bulletproof and will give the desired result. In the meantime patience would be appreciated.

    My apologies for this mistake. I'll make sure it doesn't happen again.

    Ladies and gentlemen, I am somewhat pleased to announce (well totally effin' rapt actually) that I've managed to restore the last backup of our forum to a temporary home on our test site. I'm locking posting there for the moment until I figure out the best way to proceed further. All the content is visible though and everything works.


    Our temporary archive (ahem) can be found here.
    A drop menu with a link to the archives has been added under the Search button.

    Everyone please note that your normal accounts and logins will work but there are
    some restrictions put in place to prevent this becoming even more complicated.

    1/ You will have your normal read and access permissions there.

    2/ You will not be able to post.

    3/ You will be not be able to use the pm system or edit your account details in any way.

    Just letting people know that I'll be making a few minor repairs to our theme here (a couple of the buttons got messed up) and also the search function over at the archives needs fixing. I'll do it all over the weekend. If there are any glitches I miss let me know about them.

    Tried to access the archives and it says my username doesn't exist (tried both). Is that stuff still available?

    Nope. That url is now a test forum again, which is what it was before Teh Great Stuff-Up. I'll merge the databases when we upgrade the software.

    Grin Well we have thought about it, then put it off, then thought about it again, then procrastinated, then thought about it, then thought "fukkit, too much work, if it aint broke don't fix it".

    However, it is currently scheduled for early May, and we will probably actually do it this time. Smiley

    No. It was apparently a DDOS attack. Happens from time to time. Nothing to do with software version.

    Well not exactly like a virus. It's not an infection of the server. It's just an attempt to overload the server's connections to the rest of the web, by sending a lot of requests at once.

    Not a virus, basically it's like someone jamming the frequency of a radio with static so that the broadcast is drowned out. It's a temporary and pretty stupid way to try to mess with a site's functionality. But no it's not actually a virus. Also, it may not have been our site that was targeted, but one of the others in our neighbourhood.
