A 6 part documentary series by Adam Curtis which is worth a watch IMO. It explores the rise of individualism in various forms in the US, China, Britain and Russia in the 20th century the effect of those very different societies. It's self indulgent but in a way that I don't mind because Curtis makes some of the most cinematic documentaries I've seen, combining precious archive footage with hypnotic scores and thread a grand narrative through it.
He also made The Power of Nightmares and Bitter Lake, two films which looked at the West's relationship with radical Islam in the 20th century.https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/p093wp6h/cant-get-you-out-of-my-head
