Add yeast and sugar to water and you have two bi products of a process called fermentation, alcohol and carbon dioxide.

It happens everywhere, in our stomachs when we produce wind, it might be how we worked out agriculture.

So what precisely is the Islamic ban on alcohol?

I'll bite - isn't it about intoxication rather than alcohol itself? I'd guess arabs enjoyed getting senseless too much at the time of whoever banned it.

No one else tempted by this pretty fly? :-) what is the ban on alcohol about, when it is unavoidable? Yeast making bread rise makes alcohol!

You mean there's a simpler explanation? Let's see, something to do with trade...  I guess wine or its ingredients had to be imported into desert areas?

    Quote
The yeast species Saccharomyces cerevisiae converts carbohydrates to carbon dioxide and alcohols in a process known as fermentation. The products of this reaction have been used in baking and the production of alcoholic beverages for thousands of years.[8]

Why does not the Koran make fermentation haram?
