Italy's coronavirus deaths surge by 627 in a day, total death toll goes to  4,032, says news

    Quote
On Thursday, Italy overtook China as the country to register most deaths from the highly contagious respiratory disease. The total number of cases in Italy rose to 47,021 from a previous 41,035, a rise of 14.6pc, the Civil Protection Agency said.

In its most complete analysis of the outbreak yet published, the national health institute said the average age of those who died was 78.5 years, with the youngest victim aged 31 and the oldest 103. The median age was 80.

Some 41%  of all those who died were aged between 80-89, 35%  of all those who died were aged between 70-79., . Medical experts say these demographics could explain why the death toll here is so much higher than anywhere else in the world.

The ISS report, based on a survey of 3,200 of the dead, said men accounted for 70.6pc of the deaths and women 29.4pc. The median age for the women who died was 82 against 79 for men.

By comparison, the median age of those who tested positive for the illness was 63.

A deeper analysis of 481 of the deceased showed that almost 99pc of them were suffering from one or more medical condition before catching the virus. Some 48.6pc had three or more previous pathologies.

A total 73.8pc had had high blood pressure, 34pc had diabetes and 30.1pc had heart disease.

On being admitted to hospital, 76pc had a fever, 73pc had breathing difficulties, 40pc had a cough and 8pc had diarrhea.

The median time between the onset of the first symptoms and subsequent death was eight days, with the median time spent in hospital just four days.

Of the 3,200 deaths reviewed in the survey, only nine were aged less than 40, all but one of them men.

well that tells something about virus and its discrimination.,   Damn virus seems to attack men . IT IS BLOODY DISCRIMINATION ., IT IS KILLING MEN.. finmad

All 79 Cambodians back from mosque event in Malaysia tested for Covid-19 says News from Star

    Quote
PHNOM PENH: A senior Cambodian official said on Saturday (March 21) that all 79 Cambodians, who had returned home from a mass religious ceremony in Malaysia, had already been tested for the Covid-19 (coronavirus) symptoms.

Citing a health ministry statement released on Saturday (March 21), Othsman Hassan, a senior minister in charge of the Islamic affairs, said 25 of them had been tested positive for the virus.

"They were infected the virus when they attended the Islamic religious ceremony at Sri Petaling mosque in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (from Feb 27 to March 1)," he said in a press conference here.

Hassan said nearly 300 people, who are the patients' family members and close friends, had also been tested, and the health ministry statement indicated that three of them were positive for the virus.

Cambodia has so far recorded a total of 51 confirmed cases of the Covid-19. Among them are

German minister commits suicide after 'virus crisis worries'  says news with this picture

    Quote
The finance minister of Germany's Hesse state Thomas Schaefer committed suicide apparently after becoming “deeply worried” over how to cope with the economic fallout from the coronavirus, state premier Volker Bouffier said on Sunday.

Schaefer, 54, was found dead near a railway track on Saturday. The Wiesbaden prosecution's office said they believe he died by suicide.

“We are in shock, we are in disbelief and above all we are immensely sad,” Bouffier said in a recorded statement.

Hesse is home to Germany's financial capital Frankfurt, where major lenders like Deutsche Bank and Commerzbank have their headquarters. The European Central Bank is also located in Frankfurt.

A visibly shaken Bouffier recalled that Schaefer, who was Hesse's finance chief for 10 years, had been working “day and night” to help companies and workers deal with the economic impact of the pandemic. “Today we have to assume that he was deeply worried,” said Bouffier, a close ally of Chancellor Angela Merkel.

“It's precisely during this difficult time that we would have needed someone like him,” he added.

Popular and well-respected, Schaefer had long been touted as a possible successor to Bouffier. Like Bouffier, Schaefer belonged to Merkel's centre-right CDU party.

Two young nurses die as NHS braces for more coronavirus losses

    Quote
Two nurses in their 30s have died after contracting coronavirus, and it has emerged that nurses and frontline health workers are being offered grief counselling and psychological support, with the loss of more NHS lives anticipated.

Areema Nasreen, a 36-year-old NHS nurse from Walsall in the West Midlands, who was believed to have had no underlying health issues, died shortly after midnight on Thursday in intensive care at Walsall Manor hospital, where she had worked for 16 years.

Tributes were also paid to another NHS nurse, named locally as mother of three Aimee O’Rourke, who is is believed to have contracted the virus before she died. She was described as “a wonderful friend and colleague” to those who worked with her at the Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother hospital in Margate, Kent. Paying tribute to Nasreen, Toby Lewis, chief executive of the neighbouring Sandwell and West Birmingham hospitals NHS trust, said it was clear from experiences overseas – in particular Italy, where dozens of nurses and doctors have died – that health care workers were at risk.

“They are at risk not only from the patients we look after but from each other. There is additional grief counselling and psychological support being provided to staff because they are working in situations that are very different to those that they have worked in,” he said.

He added: “Will more healthcare workers pass away? With the greatest regret, I think that is a certainty. [However] it is our collective effort to try and minimise the number of tragedies that we see in the number of people who serve within the NHS.”..

well read more at that guardian link

Concerns over worshippers gathering during Ramadan

    Quote
A doctor has warned of a potential ‘big spike’ in coronavirus cases during Ramadan.

The holy month, set to begin on April 23, is typically a time of increased communal activity for Britain’s three million Muslims.

Dr Adnan Sharif, a consultant at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEH) where roughly four in 10 Covid-19 patients is from a black, Asian or ethnic minority (BAME) background, said ‘anything that leads to more social interaction is a big worry’, adding: ‘People traditionally gather to open and close prayers and break fast at sundown with friends and neighbours, which could cause a big spike in infections.’

His warning follows calls from the British Medical Association (BMA) for an inquiry into why people from BAME backgrounds appear more vulnerable to the respiratory disease.

No doubt some, or many will flout guidelines because their stupid faith is more important than the health of the general population.

Also eye catching is the fact that people from 'ethnic minority backgrounds' are being disproportionately affected by the virus.

    Quote
Dr Sharif said it remains unclear why the virus seems to disproportionately affect non-white groups.

He suggested: ‘They usually have households of multiple occupancy, where grandparents, parents and children all live in the same home and there is lots of communal activity.’

Other experts pointed to socioeconomic factors along with the fact that many BAME patients tend to have public-facing roles and live in cities hit worst by the virus.

Coffins arrive at makeshift coronavirus morgue in a Birmingham mosque car park where 150 bodies from city's Islamic community can be stored before traditional Muslim burial...

Chilling images of coffins stacked up high inside the tent show the grim reality of the Cov-19 fatality numbers.

It is believed to be one of the first glimpses inside a makeshift morgue which have been springing up across Britain.
