A painting of Qasem Soleimani embraced by Imam Hussein in heaven as a martyr. The Islamic Republic has very effectively used the death of Soleimani to create an illusion of unity in Iran and among Shias in the region, which was much needed after the recent protests. But the underlying economic problems and sectarian divisions remain. This illusion will not last long.

That is much worse ., forcing people in to large crowd...

but the news says  Iran attacks US forces in Iraq in retaliation for killing of commander

    Quote
Iran said it launched a missile attack on US-led forces in Iraq in the early hours of Wednesday in retaliation for the US drone strike on an Iranian commander whose killing has raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East.

    Quote
Tehran fired more than a dozen ballistic missiles from Iranian territory against at least two Iraqi military bases hosting US-led coalition personnel at about 1:30am local time, the US military said on Tuesday.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps confirmed that they fired the rockets to retaliate for last week's killing of Qasem Soleimani, according to a statement on state TV.

The statement advised the United States to withdraw its troops from the region to prevent more deaths, state TV said.

The Pentagon did not provide reports of casualties in the attack.

"We are working on initial battle damage assessments," Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Hoffman said in a statement, adding that the bases targeted were al-Asad air base and another in Erbil, Iraq.

"As we evaluate the situation and our response, we will take all necessary measures to protect and defend US personnel, partners, and allies in the region."

US President Donald Trump, who visited the al-Asad air base in December 2018, has been briefed on reports of the attack and was monitoring the situation, White House spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said.

"We are aware of the reports of attacks on US facilities in Iraq. The president has been briefed and is monitoring the situation closely and consulting with his national security team," Grisham said in a statement.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and US Defence Secretary Mark Esper arrived at the White House following news of the attack. It was unclear what response, if any, the United States was planning.

Hours earlier on Tuesday, Esper said the United States should anticipate retaliation from Iran over Friday's killing in Iraq of Soleimani, commander of the elite Quds Force.

    Quote
"I think we should expect that they will retaliate in some way, shape or form," he told a news briefing at the Pentagon, adding that such retaliation could be through Iran-backed proxy groups outside of Iran or "by their own hand".

"We're prepared for any contingency. And then we will respond appropriately to whatever they do."

Military jets could be seen flying over the Iraqi capital early Wednesday, hours after the missile attack.

AFP's correspondents saw jets cutting through the clouds over Baghdad but could not immediately identify the planes.

Stock markets in Asia fell sharply on news of the rocket attack, while investor safe havens including the Japanese yen and gold shot higher. US crude prices surged almost 5 per cent on worries any conflict could cut oil supplies.

The US Federal Aviation Administration said it would prohibit US civil aviation operators from operating in the airspace over Iraq, Iran, the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Singapore Airlines had already diverted all flight routes from Iranian airspace.

....................French President Emmanuel Macron, in a phone call on Tuesday to Iran's president, Hassan Rouhani, urged Tehran to avoid any actions that could worsen regional tensions.

US officials have said Soleimani was killed because of solid intelligence indicating forces under his command planned attacks on US targets in the region, although they have provided no evidence.

Ali Shamkhani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, said 13 "revenge scenarios" were being considered, Fars news agency reported. Even the weakest option would prove "a historic nightmare for the Americans", he said.

An Iranian diplomat has told IranWire that Iran intentionally attacked “US bases and facilities” and deliberately avoided “personnel” on the morning of January 8, after days of deliberation. During a short call using a public phone, the diplomat, who asked not to be named or have his location disclosed because he feared repercussions for discussing sensitive matters, said, “I’m just worried about the possibility of a war and destruction and just wanted to talk to someone I could trust.”

The diplomat insisted that he only had a few minutes to speak and did not want to risk using an Iranian mission’s landline or his cell phone. “Everything we do can be monitored. So I have to be cautious,” he told IranWire.

According to the diplomat, the levels of external and internal security have increased in Iranian missions around the world since January 3, when US forces killed Iranian Revolutionary Guards general Ghasem Soleimani in Baghdad, Iraq. “There’s more police presence around the missions and the movements of the embassy staff are monitored more than before.”

According to the diplomat, Iran’s decision to attack two American bases in Al Asad, northwest of Baghad, and Erbil in the Iraqi Independent Kurdistan region, came after days of deliberation in Tehran. “From what I know some Revolutionary Guards and military commanders insisted that Iran’s revenge must be restrained and that any American casualty can lead to an all-out war that could lead to the destruction of many parts of Iran and possibly the downfall of the government.” The diplomat said those who urged for restraint were led by Ali Shamkhani (the secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran). Admiral Shamkhani is a former Revolutionary Guards’ commander and, like General Soleimani, is a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War (1980-88). “Mr Shamkhani knows what war is and doesn’t want to see a repeat of it.”

Among those who insisted on taking deadly revenge were members of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s family and staff, the diplomat said. “From what I know from very reliable sources, the people around Mr Khamenei thought revenge must be taken quickly, otherwise Mr Khamenei would look weak and vulnerable.”

US forces have reported no casualties in the bases. Meanwhile, Iranian Revolutionary Guards have said that at least 80 “American terrorists” were killed in the attacks, referring to American soldiers. The Guards have also threatened to attack 104 other American and Israeli targets in the region if the US retaliates. In a tweet following the attacks, President Trump said, “All is well! Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning.”

The diplomat contacted IranWire only a few minutes before Ayatollah Khamenei addressed the Iranian nation on January 8. In the speech, the ayatollah praised Soleimani’s wisdom and intelligence. “Some people are brave but not wise,” said Khamenei. “But the martyr Soleimani was brave and wise.” The Leader also called for national unity and the end of the US “corrupt presence” in the Middle East. “We slapped the Americans last night,” he said. “We’ve not taken revenge yet.”

“Mr. Khamenei is 80 years old and all he’s thinking about is his legacy. He doesn’t want to be remembered as a leader who surrendered to the Americans,” said the Iranian diplomat. “Please pray for Iran. May God save us.”

Iran says 80 Americans killed in missile strikes
    Quote
    Quote
Iranian state television said on Wednesday that at least 80 "American terrorists" were killed in attacks involving 15 missiles Tehran launched on U.S. targets in Iraq, adding that none of the missiles were intercepted.

State TV, citing a senior Revolutionary Guards source, also said Iran had 100 other targets in the region in its sights if Washington took any retaliatory measures. It also said U.S. helicopters and military equipment were "severely damaged".

Iran launched missile attacks on U.S.-led forces in Iraq in the early hours of Wednesday in retaliation for the U.S. drone strike on an Iranian commander whose killing has raised fears of a wider war in the Middle East.

Shortly after the attack, Iran's army renewed the demand for U.S. troops to be withdrawn from the Middle East.

"Now that they have understood our power, it is time for the United States to withdraw its troops from the Middle East," Iran's armed forces chief of staff General Mohammad Baqeri said in a statement, according to state television.

Iran plane crash: Canada mourns Iran crash victims_ 138 were connected to Canada says BBC news

    Quote
All 176 people on board Ukraine Flight PS752 were killed early on Wednesday morning when the plane crashed shortly after takeoff in Iran.

    Quote
The flight was headed for Kiev, but the vast majority of them - 138 according to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau - were connecting to Canada.

Sixty-three of them were Canadian nationals, but many more called Canada their home, at least temporarily.

They lived in cities like Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Edmonton. Many were students or professors, working on important research in their fields.

US sanctions have made it increasingly difficult to travel between Iran and Canada, and the Ukraine International Airlines flight from Tehran to Kiev and then to Toronto is popular because it is one of the most affordable options for the journey, said Younes Zangiabadi with the Iranian Canadian Congress.
    Quote
The deaths have cast a pall over university campuses across the country.

"They were the best of us," Elnaz Morshedi told the BBC at a vigil held for the victims at the University of Toronto.

Like many being held across the country, it was a impromptu event, quickly put together in the hours after the plane went down.

The ceremony was held mostly in Persian, in a small room in a student housing complex on campus.

Over 100 people gathered to pay their respects, and to share Quranic verses and stories about the loved ones who died.

Tea and sweets were served. Many were still in shock from the news, less than 24 hours old.

"You look at the odds of such a thing happening to you," said Seyed Hossein Mortazavi with disbelief, "but I suppose that's fate."

"They definitely didn't expect this. None of us did. But I think it's just a burden the whole community has to carry."

Canada is home to a large Iranian diaspora, with some 210,000 citizens of Iranian descent, according to the federal census. But Mr Mortazavi said that on campuses the community feels small.

The truth about that flight is still in dark.. there is very little to doubt whether  that flight was shot down  or not but the question to answer is  WAS IT AN ACCIDENT OR DELIBERATE .....

  • Is Iran/Persia going to burn again & go back to 1979??

^It’s speculation but my guess is that it was shot down by accident. Posts here from another forum by someone in the UK military:
    Quote
Tbh, pretty much everyone says it looks like a mistaken shoot down by an Iranian missile site - it simply looks like nothing else.

    Quote
More nuanced than that - all communication with the aircraft (including all the uncommanded stuff like transponder, ASD-B etc.. ended suddenly, and then the aircraft fluttered/cartwheeled around in the air until it hit the ground. There's video of it flying/falling/burning, and it's not remotely reminiscent of any kind of controlled flight that you've ever seen.

The flight pattern (like everything else) is very reminiscent of the Malaysian shoot down over Ukraine - it fluttered down like a piece of paper dropped out of a window: forwards, backwards, upside down....

    Quote
The 'how/why?' is pretty easy - Tehran is surrounded buy anti-aircraft missile batteries and this happened at exactly the time that Tehran expected to be attacked by air.

Jumpy battery commander seeing what he expected to see and reacted to it - the annals of military history are bulging at the seams with incidents where someone who is tired/stressed/scared sees something that they interpret as what they are expecting/fear/hoping for and they charge at it, completely disregarding the huge pile of evidence/indicators that in fact it's very much not the thing they expect/fear/hope for.

    Quote
Not really. It was an early morning flight, if not the first, then one of the first. Tunnel vision tells you the aircraft is descending even when the radar you're looking at tells it's ascending, tunnel vision tells you it's transponder is squawking a foreign military code even when the radar you're looking at tells you it's squawking a civilian code, tunnel vision tells you it's screaming in at Mach 1 even when your radar tells you it's doing 350kts and flying out from the airport.

^It’s speculation but my guess is that it was shot down by accident................

WHO DO YOU THINK SHOT DOWN THAT PLANE WITH FULL OF INTERNATIONAL PASSENGERS BY ACCIDENT dear zeca??

well I would suggest a better route for western traveler that are visiting Iran ......

    England..................Pakistan..............Iran by bus
    Canada...................Pakistan................Iran by bus
    US of A.....................Pakistan.................Iran by bus

It doesn't matter where you get down in Pakistan .. you can travel to Gwadar International Airport.. and take a bus.. or jump on to a truck ....beautiful area to travel...

I hope Prime minister Khan takes a note of that route...and makes better arrangements for travelers

well plane crash site gives  a tell tale sign of how the plane went down..

It is unclear what caused the plane to crash minutes after the aircraft took off from Tehran. Initial explanations from both Ukraine and Iran contradict one another. Iranian officials have said the Boeing 737-800 crashed due to mechanical issues.

The scenario put forward by the army officer above looks perfectly clear to me. Given the threat of war, which isn’t something new, the Iranian military must be prepared for air attacks on Tehran, with anti-aircraft missiles ready for action. It looks like someone expecting an American reprisal raid for the missile attacks on Iraqi bases made a terrible mistake and shot down an early morning civilian flight thinking it was a US missile, plane or drone.

Of course there may be another explanation but for now that sounds likely.

WHO IS THAT SOME ONE? IRANIAN AIR FORCE?  the flight left Tehran airport  just four minutes ago before it was shot down.. it takes another three minute to  fly in to skies.. So the rogues shot it down with in 7mts of it took off..

Such sloppy countries and their armies who do not coordinate the flight leaving their own airport  do not need air force and atomic weapons .. IDIOTS .. and if it is not related to Iranian govt ., then Iran is in a much worse shape with respect  to their military power and its coordination with their  Private mullah militias...

Many who left Iran after questioning  that Mullah hero Islam in 80s left the country.. unfortunately their children and relatives become  victims of such government policies as they are interested to learn their parents pas/culture ,,..  It happened against war with Saddam Hussein.. and it is happening now...

    British, as I stated above.

WHO IS THAT SOME ONE? IRANIAN AIR FORCE?

I don’t know whether anti-aircraft defences would be operated by the air force, the army or some other group.

A few hours after the deadly stampede, one of the injured told IRNA that the incident occurred when security guards prevented people from crossing a section of Shariati Avenue. According to him, people rushed toward the avenue, but many of them lost their balance and fell to the ground when security guards blocked their access, leading to the deaths and injuries.

“If side streets had been open, the density of the crowd would have been lower but security personnel were adamant that people must return to the main street and that is why this tragedy happened,” he said. A number of other injured people confirmed this assessment.

There was a broad wave of criticisms on social media about the mismanagement of the funeral procession. Many asked why the organizers had failed to take the necessary precautions.

Mehdi Ali Ghanbarlou, a Mehr News Agency photographer, had warned the responsible officials of the potential danger, publishing photographs of the location of the ceremonies six hours before it was due to start. Ghanbarlou wrote that he was leaving the area so that he would not have to take photographs of the victims.

The Ukrainian passenger jet that crashed shortly after takeoff from Tehran on Wednesday was accidentally shot down by an Iranian anti-aircraft missile, western security officials believe.

UK sources told the Guardian that British officials had seen intelligence that suggested that the plane was hit by an Iranian air defence missile.

Western intelligence agencies are understood to have picked up signals of the missile launch, followed by the traces of an explosion. A British source said: “The assessment is that it looks like it is a tragic accident.” One report suggested that two missiles were involved, but this could not immediately be confirmed.

Separately, officials told US media they had identified the signature from an Iranian anti-aircraft missile battery being activated shortly before the aircraft crashed into countryside south-west of the Iranian capital, killing all on 176 on board. The officials also said they had identified the infrared signature from two suspected missile launches followed shortly afterwards by the infrared blip from the burning and fatally disabled aircraft.

A totally irresponsible and preventable tragedy. Airplanes should have been grounded or warned prior to Iran's rocket attacks. In avenging the death of one Iranian official, Tehran may have caused the death of 176 innocent people, many of whom were Iranian

why would a missile go backward ,  towards Tehran airport  on to a flight path  if they fired missiles at  American bases in Iraq  towards Erblil and  Al-Asad airbase??

Yeez - the Ukrainian plane was brought down by a surface to air missile. That’s a missile used for anti-aircraft defence and nothing to to with the long range missiles fired at Iraqi bases a couple of hours before. I see no real doubt that it was a mistake.
