Is Iran/Persia going to burn again & go back to 1979??

Top Iran commander killed in US strike on Baghdad; Khamenei vows ‘severe revenge’ says Dawn news

    Quote
Top Iranian commander Qasem Soleimani was killed on Friday in a US strike on Baghdad's international airport, confirmed Iran and the US, in a dramatic escalation of tensions between the two countries.

The Pentagon said US President Donald Trump ordered Soleimani's "killing", after a pro-Iran mob this week laid siege to the US embassy. Following Soleimani's death, Trump tweeted an image of the US flag without any further explanation. In the wake of the assassination, the US embassy in Baghdad urged all citizens to depart Iraq immediately.

“Due to heightened tensions in Iraq and the region, the US embassy urges American citizens to heed the January 2020 travel advisory and depart Iraq immediately."

"US citizens should depart via airline while possible, and failing that, to other countries via land,” it said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed to exact “severe revenge” for Soleimani's death.

“Martyrdom was the reward for his ceaseless efforts in all these years,” Khamenei said on his Twitter account in reference to Soleimani, also declaring three days of mourning.

“With him gone, God willing, his work and his path will not be stopped, but severe revenge awaits the criminals who bloodied their foul hands with his blood and other martyrs' in last night's incident,“ he added.

I don't know what god wills and don't know what god's revenge is.,    But Govt of  Pakistan specially Imran Khan should be very careful what he says ..  Iran is neighbor with a very long border...

    Was Soleimani a mass-murderer? Yes

Are most (non-Iraqi/Syrian) reactions on twitter based on actual knowledge of him? No

Are there lots of people just worried of the consequences and believe this was a reckless move? Yes

Should we be thinking of consequences for anti-sectarian Iraqi protesters who lost loved ones because of him? Yes

Can it become too dangerous for them to protest for their rights and against sectarianism due to the role of Iran-backed sectarian militias? Yes

Are there loads of sectarians, especially in the diaspora/west, who will repeat the 'Soleimani defeated ISIS' narrative while ignoring the role of Iran's campaigns of mass murder in Syria and Iraq? Yes

Can we trust Donald 'I put babies in cages' Trump in anything? No

Are there people already pushing for 'Iran's territorial integrity' narrative, essentially offering Baghdad as part of Iran's territory? Yes

Should they stop doing that and focus on individual countries' dynamics instead of reducing everything all the time? Yes

As some have said, no one really thought that Soleimani would ever be gone. This is how hero worship works. It's by design. I spent my time looking at Syria with the knowledge that he was a big reason as to why the Assad regime survived the revolution. Now I'm just waiting.

Qasem Soleimani and his life and his legacy

    Quote
Qasem Soleimani (Persian: قاسم سلیمانی‎‎; 11 March 1957 – 3 January 2020) was an Iranian major general in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and from 1998 until his death, commander of its Quds Force, a division primarily responsible for extraterritorial military and clandestine operations.

Soleimani began his military career in the beginning of the Iran–Iraq War of the 1980s, during which he commanded the 41st Division. He was later involved in extraterritorial operations, providing military assistance to anti-Saddam Shia and Kurdish groups in Iraq, and later Hezbollah in Lebanon and Hamas in the Palestinian territories. In 2012, Soleimani helped bolster the Syrian government, a key Iranian ally, during the Syrian Civil War, particularly in its operations against ISIS and its offshoots. Soleimani also assisted in the command of combined Iraqi government and Shia militia forces that advanced against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in 2014–2015.

Soleimani was killed in a targeted U.S. airstrike on 3 January 2020 in Baghdad, Iraq. Also killed were Popular Mobilization Forces members.

All what happened today is "worthless” according to legal experts I talked to. The US are in Iraq according to the strategic framework signed by both sides it can be canceled only with la, one of two parts request the cancellation then it will be canceled within a year

And basically Iraqi government resigned more than month ago. Abdulmahdi’s government is only caretaker government, they don’t get to do any step. There should be a new government.

Parliament passed a "decision" to remove coalition forces from Iraq. Halbusi clarified that the cancellation of the agreement requires a legislation. A draft needs to be presented by the PM or the President, pass first and second reading, then a one year notice for withdrawal.

Today’s vote in Iraqi Parliament does not by itself compel the US military to leave Iraq. Troops are there at the invitation of the executive branch — not Parliament — so the vote is mainly symbolic, confirming a political mandate for the PM to kick out US forces.

    Quote
But if anyone is looking for a face-saving way to keep US troops in Iraq despite today’s Parliament vote, one could argue this is a decision that can only be made by the next (non-quasi-caretaker) Iraqi government.

US Vice President Mike Pence misleadingly links Iran general to 9/11  Says Facts Check  News from Dawn

    Quote
US President Donald Trump closed out the old year by reprising a selection of his most familiar falsehoods and putting a few of his predecessor’s accomplishments in his own win column.

His vice president, seeking to justify the US military’s targeted killing of a top Iranian general, helped begin the new year with a baseless claim tying that general to the 9/11 attacks.

    Quote
What he said: US Vice President, listing some of the “worst atrocities” of Iranian General Qassem Soleimani, on Friday: Trump “took decisive action and stood up against the leading state sponsor of terror to take out an evil man who was responsible for killing thousands of Americans. ... (Soleimani) assisted in the clandestine travel to Afghanistan of 10 of the 12 terrorists who carried out the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States.”

    Quote
The facts: Pence misleadingly ties Soleimani to the September 11, 2001, attacks on New York City’s World Trade Center. There is no evidence that Iran directly supported the 9/11 hijackers, many of them Saudi members of Al Qaeda, nor are there any known reports that Soleimani was involved in assisting with their travel to Afghanistan.

First of all, there were 19 hijackers on 9/11, not 12. Pence spokeswoman Katie Waldman later clarified in a tweet that Pence was referring to those hijackers who traveled to Afghanistan through Iran before the attacks.

According to a 19-page, unsigned report found among Osama bin Laden’s personnel effects in the Abbottabad raid, Iran allowed Al Qaeda operatives to pass through its borders from Saudi Arabia to Afghanistan without receiving stamps in their passports or with visas obtained at its consulate in Pakistan. Fifteen of the hijackers were from Saudi Arabia, two from the United Arab Emirates, one from Egypt, and one from Lebanon.

That is consistent with the 9/11 Commission’s report, which found that some of the Sept 11 hijackers — possibly eight — passed through Iran.

However, nowhere does the commission’s report mention Soleimani, let alone indicate he was behind the lax travel practices that allowed Al Qaeda operatives through. The commission, in particular, “found no evidence that Iran or Hezbollah was aware of the planning for what later became the 9/11 attack” or that even the future hijackers themselves knew about their operation when traveling through Iran.

That makes it a stretch to imply Soleimani knew about plans for the 9/11 attacks and then worked to facilitate them.

After the attacks, Al Qaeda members, including Osama bin Laden’s son Hamza, fled into Iran, but they were ultimately rounded up by the Iranian government and imprisoned.
