the cloud of worry darkens but there could be a silver lining. if the tories pursue secular nationalism (rather than ethnic) and the labour party abandon their patronage of pakistanis (biraderi types and islamic activists) then muslims may have a brighter future in britain.

then again, that silver lining is probably just a lightning bolt on the leading edge of a storm front.

Perhaps most controversially, Glasman calls on progressives to recognise their ‘responsibility for the generation of far-right populism’, currently manifested in the growth of the English Defence League. ‘You consider yourself … so opposed that you don’t want to talk to them, you don’t want to engage with them, you don’t want anybody with views like that anywhere near the party.’ This, he believes, is to ignore ‘a massive hate and rage against us’ from working-class people ‘who have always been true to Labour’. The solution, he says, is ‘to build a party that brokers a common good, that involves those people who support the EDL within our party. Not dominant in the party, not setting the tone of the party, but just a reconnection with those people that we can represent a better life for them, because that’s what they want.’

The Brexit Party topped polls in every country or region apart from London, which was won by the Liberal Democrats; Scotland, which was won by the SNP; and Northern Ireland, where they did not stand.

Actually what bothers me more is that I can see a wider constituency for a watered down version of this on the left. As a fairly random example here’s a post just now from the urban75 forum which has been liked by a few people:

    Quote
Just on this, the blue labour bit - there are aspects of blue labour that appeals to me, in as much as I think people in and around blue labour are sometimes better at rooting themselves in what the working class actually is and the rejection of the annoying-ness of the orthodox modern left is something that strikes a chord, but then there are many other parts of what blue labour is that is regressive rose tinted shite. Tbf blue labour isn't one thing, it's lots of competing things so I suppose that's inevitable.

But Blue Labour as an actually existing grouping - Glasman (baron) met with nick timothy and others around May in run up to '17 election (which is where some of the shit in tory manifesto came from), against a labour opposition actually offering materially different policy, also called for ban on all immigration. That is fucking grim shite and should absolutely be opposed. Stuff I've read from prominent blue labour types like rowenna davies has been shit too, not in any way offering insight on advancement of working class interests, backed Smith in challenge too. Both in Spiked orbit too. Fuck the pair of them.

Then, of course, there is the fact that blue labour was very influential in Miliband era, its ideas were tested and found wanting. Yeah there is some wheat to separate from chaff but there is a fuck load of chaff.

If the left can look at blue labour ideas and see anything to be attracted by then something is going very wrong.

"give the people what they want." since the 90s it was pandering to minorities and the like. from the 20's it may be appeasing white van man and that ilk.

anti racism and progressive values are just lines in the shifting sand. initial protests and indignation give way to sanitisation and then consensus.

slightly botched (perhaps intentionally) but this message will be refined for the bigger news outlets.

    Quote from:
Philips, who also writes for the Times, wrote in the newspaper that the entire concept of Islamophobia was “profoundly anti-Jew” and had been invented to mimic antisemitism, adding: “To equate it with the dehumanising, insane and essentially murderous outpourings of Jew-hatred is obscene.”

The Board of Deputies of British Jews said the publication of this piece was an error: “Anti-Muslim prejudice is very real and it is on the rise. Our community must stand as allies to all facing racism.”

    some context.

    Quote from:
The Muslim Council of Britain has accused the Conservative Party of “whitewashing” Islamophobia in its ranks by launching a non-specific inquiry into discrimination that supposedly falls short of what it pledged.

On Tuesday, the council repeated its calls for an independent inquiry into Islamophobia specifically, as the Tories announced the appointment of Professor Swaran Singh to lead a review into prejudice and discrimination in the party.

Singh is the former commissioner of the Equality and Human Rights commission. In August, he wrote an article for Spiked magazine – a publication that has previously published articles calling Islamophobia a myth and dismissing the increase of hate crime in the UK.

“This appointment is at risk of being seen in the same light as the Conservative Party’s customary approach to Islamophobia: that of denial, dismissal and deceit,” Khan said.

Yes. It looks like part of a campaign. It also looks like the BBC is actively pushing Blue Labour - they’ve already had Glasman on Newsnight. I get the feeling that the narrative is about to pivot from Labour having too much racism to Labour not being racist enough.

    japanification.

    Quote from:
If there are any lessons for Britain’s Labour Party, they are not from the Democratic Party of Japan, the main counterbalance to the conservative LDP over the past two decades. In the last election in 2017, the party split, with half joining an LDP breakaway centre-right group. Each faction collected just over 10 per cent of available seats, against the LDP’s 60 per cent. The poverty of viable options at election time has meant that nearly half the population no longer bothers to cast a vote.

Into this space of political inaction has stepped the Nippon Kaigi – the “Japan Conference”. The stated aim of this right-wing organisation, formed in 1997, is to “build a nation with pride”. Its goals are not just nationalist but neo-imperial, inspired by a selective memory of Japanese “greatness” at the height of colonial expansion. The group seeks a new constitution recalling that of the Meiji era, when the Japanese were duty-bearing subjects rather than rights-bearing citizens. It hopes to return the emperor to the centre of political power, in a throwback to the rhetoric and images used to rally the populace during the Second World War. Traditional family values – women in the kitchen, off the throne and under their husband’s family name – form another area they want to strengthen.

pagan boris and the ghost of christmas past - happy saturnalia and merry yule to brexit britain.

    Quote from:
His grander fortune is the partial affinity between paganism and the part of English Christian heritage that stands against radical Protestantism – whether in its religious or secular form. This tradition insists there is a virtuous elect, and a sharp separation between the sacred or teleological and the earthly or enduring contingencies of place and human weakness. In 1647, the Puritan government passed a law outlawing celebrating Christmas, believing the festivities to be a pagan custom. When the mayor of Canterbury tried to enforce the diktat that shops stay open and no mince pies be eaten, the cathedral city’s citizens rioted. In the New Year, they took up arms for their once hated king against parliament. It did Charles I no good. But with the Restoration, the attachment to Christmas defeated parliament.

following on from the last year's post, boris has surprised everyone (including himself) by announcing a ban on christmas.

he included a token concession to communal worship but unclear that will be enough to prevent a backlash against scientific puritanism and the economic realities of a no-deal brexit in the new year.
