HELSINKI: A 28-year-old woman wearing a face veil has become the first person in Denmark to be fined for violating a new law banning such garments in public places.

Danish news agency Ritzau reported that police were called to a shopping centre in Horsholm, a city of some 46,000 inhabitants close to Copenhagen, on Friday to confront a woman wearing a niqab garment covering her face.

The woman was slapped with a fine of 1,000 Danish kroner ($156) and requested to either remove the veil or leave the premises. She opted to leave.

Since Aug 1, the country’s much-debated “Burqa Ban” has prohibited full-body burqas, as well the niqab, a Muslim dress which only shows the eyes. Both are rare in Denmark. Other European countries have similar bans.

1) Burka covered women look like letter boxes? Meh.

2) Comparing them to bank robbers? Looking like bank robbers? Perhaps an asinine comparison.

3) Burka shouldn't be banned, most important point.

Anything else that needs to be pointed out about this same argument that comes up every now and then? I mean besides the fact that some (or many) people would like to see it banned for their own amazingly 'altruistic' reasons to protect and empower Muslim women (.........by challenging our civil liberties.......).

I'm tired, fucking signing out.

Women who wear niqabs are normal human beings, not letterboxes or bank robbers, and should be given a choice if that is truly what they want to wear. Boris is an opportunistic idiot for attacking people who aren't harming anyone (except for themselves, arguably). But just because people should be free to make these choices doesn't mean that we can't be critical of their choices.

He could have aired his distaste for the niqaab/burqa without dehumanising the women who wear it (many of whom are vulnerable and are wearing it as a result of pressure from their communities and families).

Again...we’re discussing this issue from a priviligied position, choice is a myth, especially for minorities who are raised in hyperpatriarchical cultures.

No free mixing of the sexes is permitted on these forums or via PM or the various chat groups that are operating.

Women must write modestly and all men must lower their case.

Convert women, women from liberal families and so forth do generally have a choice. That being said, I am well aware that the majority of women who wear the niqab don't have the same luxury. There is nothing wrong with pointing this out, along with all of the other ills that the niqab brings. My issue was how he is further victimising those women who are already being victimised by male chauvinists.
