4chan is a controversial and largely unmoderated discussion forum. The site, created in 2003 by then 15-year-old Christopher Poole, allows users to post anonymously without so much as a pseudonym. It has been a haven for profoundly offensive antisemitic, sexist, racist and graphic content.

On Sunday, 4chan owner Hiroyuki Nisimura posted an apology on the forum, stating that the site "can't afford infrastructure costs, network fee, servers cost, CDN and etc, now."

    ...

Nisimura listed three options for 4chan's future: Slow the speed of the site, limit the size of pictures users can post and even close some boards entirely; add more ads; or have more people sign up for its paid feature, 4chan Pass.

Nisimura, a Japanese entrepreneur who took over the site in 2015, wrote that 4chan recently cut down on the number of ads on its site due to ad serving costs. In an email sent to CNNMoney, he said that 4chan is not for advertisers and that "attracting advertisers is not [the] first option." He said relying on ads is "risky," citing ad blockers -- where users block ads from surfacing in their browsers.

For a few days now, WikLeaks has been publishing select emails from Clinton campaign chairman John Podesta — and the leaks are starting to cause serious damage. Most likely obtained from a hacked archive file, the latest dump contains all sorts of sensitive info on Podesta with no obvious news value, including his Social Security number and enough info to compromise his Twitter account.

But the most painful casualty of the latest dump may have been Podesta’s iPhone. The leak contained Podesta’s Apple ID credentials as well as a significant array of other personal data, and a group of 4chan users claim to have used that information to gain access to Podesta’s iCloud account. From there, they triggered a remote wipe of both an iPhone and iPad belonging to the campaign chief. Others claim to have also downloaded all of the data in Podesta's iCloud account, although those claims are difficult to verify.

Before the wipe, the attackers posted a screenshot of Podesta's iPhone somewhere in Downtown Brooklyn, near the Clinton campaign headquarters. (Clinton herself is currently in California.)

4chan is - rather was, before the anti-#gamergate purge - a haven for everybody. Some of them were bigots. Some of them were just trolls (there is a difference). Sometimes what I saw there were posts like we saw on Post Secret: people in the middle of the night posting secrets and seeking advice, which help they couldn't get at home, anonymously.

Earlier today I saw a heartbreaking post by an ex-Muslim on here who's losing his family because he's an ex-Muslim and his wife is choosing her mosque over him. That's exactly the sort of thing I used to see on 4chan.
