CARACAS, Venezuela — President Nicolás Maduro was chased at a routine political event by a crowd of angry protesters banging on pots and yelling that they were hungry, just days after thousands of Venezuelans took to the streets to call for his ouster, local news media reported on Saturday.

Scenes from the confrontation late Friday, which also appeared in videos uploaded to social media, captured the attention of Venezuelans, many of whom blame the unpopular president for the country’s food shortages.

In one video, Mr. Maduro tries to calm the pot-bangers by walking among them, only to be surrounded as the furious crowd yells obscenities.

“What is this?” an astounded voice behind the camera asks in one of the video clips.

Mr. Maduro had traveled from the capital, Caracas, to Margarita Island off Venezuela’s northern coast to inaugurate a number of new public housing units and give a televised address.

During the speech, he denounced his opponents’ calls for his removal from office, calling them “vampires” and saying they were preparing for violence.

Is anyone here knowledgeable about economics? What is your assessment of Venezuela?

I haven't been keeping up to date with what's been happening in Venezuela, but my understanding is that the country's economy is heavily reliant on oil. The socialist government has been funding its social program through its oil revenue. I'm gonna venture a guess and say that since the price of oil has been dropping, the government has had to cut its spending.

I haven't been following but I think the economy was coming apart before the fall in oil prices, which of course has made the situation far worse.

Caracas (AFP) - Banging empty pots, protesters in crisis-stricken Venezuela vented anger at the authorities Friday after a new delay in the process of calling a referendum on removing President Nicolas Maduro from power.

Hundreds of protesters marched down Liberator Avenue in central Caracas behind a giant banner reading "We won't take it" after the electoral authorities indefinitely postponed announcing dates for the final stage in the referendum process.

Maduro's opponents, who blame the leftist leader for a crushing recession and severe food shortages, must collect four million signatures in three days to trigger a recall referendum.

The National Electoral Council (CNE) had been due to announce the timeline Friday.

But late Thursday it said the announcement -- which had already been pushed back from Tuesday -- would have to wait because opposition protests were threatening the safety of its staff.

The speaker of the opposition-majority legislature, Henry Ramos Allup, accused the authorities of "sabotaging" the referendum.

"The more they delay, the angrier we get," said one protester, 41-year-old Robert Sanchez, banging a pot with a spoon -- a traditional form of protest in much of Latin America.

Some rather depressing analysis from a Venezuelan academic:

The "unconditional solidarity" of the left with Chavismo
    Quote
Edgardo Lander is not only an academic, a Professor at the Central University of Venezuela and a Fellow of the Transnational Institute, he is also an activist who has been linked to social movements and the left for many years. From this point of view, he affirms that the Latin American left’s unconditional support of Chavismo has reinforced the negative tendencies of the Venezuelan experience. He argues that many leftists around the world have not learned from past mistakes and end up endorsing “mafia governments” such as that of Nicaragua, and that “when the Venezuelan model collapses”, the international left may simply “look elsewhere”...

Venezuela's Ruling Party Wins Surprise Victory In Regional Elections

Candidates in Venezuela aligned with the movement founded by the late President Hugo Chavez have claimed most of the country's governorships, despite projections that the opposition would win. The results were likely to result in fresh unrest in the troubled nation.

Reporting from Caracas, NPR's Philip Reeves says: "Polls said Venezuela's opposition were going to be big winners in these elections. Instead, the ruling socialist party are now celebrating what Maduro calls 'a decisive victory,' after taking 17 of the country's 23 state governorships."

Opposition politicians are refusing to recognize the results of the poll, Philip reports.....
