    Donald Trump's announcement that he would ban Muslims from entering America if he becomes president has provoked reactions on the internet ranging from outrage and anger to bafflement and utter disbelief.



    Many Twitter users - including politicians, novelists and celebrities from around the world - were deeply concerned by the tenor of Trump's comments, and the manner in which they were wholeheartedly embraced by his supporters.

    Others pointed out some flaws in his logic.

    While some turned to humour.

    But many tweets conveyed a real sense of disquiet and dismay.

    He'd probably alienate a lot of Republican voters and independents, but he's by no means politically irrelevant. I don't think this is a case of "ignore it and it'll go away."

    Although it's depressing is it not?The symbiosis between Islamism and the 'nativist' (don't know if that's the right word exactly) ultra-right wing, conservatism sweeping the Occident and Orient.

    As I like to tell my orthodox Muslim friends (re the secular, liberal, godless West): you'll miss the liberals when they're gone.

    Saw an interesting idea yesterday. Dunno if it's true or not, but it would fit with Trump's look-at-me personality. Short version is that he got into this just for the lulz and never expected it to go this far (the money involved is trifling to him). According to this theory, his ever-more-extreme statements are attempts to deliberately crash his campaign so he doesn't have to face the dreadful prospect of actually being elected, but he's finding out that you can't out-loony real loonies.

    It's nothing but pandering to the religious base of the Republican party. He needs their votes to become the nominee. If he becomes the nominee he will backpedal or change his mind since he will no longer need to pander to the religious base of the GOP. He already has their support, they will vote for him since they are GOP members. Core members of political parties will support their nominee in the Presidential election even if they opposed it during the nomination election. Their opposition to the Democrat party will force them to vote GOP. Trump will need the support of the independents so pandering to the religious bigotry and fear mongers of the religious base will drive them to Hillary.

    The Trump rhetoric is dangerous as it just feeds the illogical fears of the illogical religious base of the GOP. Trumps ideas are logical when you look at who he is pandering to. It is illogical as a state policy so will never happen. However the idiotic base of the GOP will not understand this, hence why he is pandering. This is the problem of democracy, a moron's vote has the same value as a genius. Morons are far more common than geniuses so it is better to double down on the stupid card then to play the intelligent card.
