  • Turkey: At least 28 killed in suicide bombing in Suruc
     OP - July 20, 2015, 09:24 AM

The target was young socialists and HDP. A synchronised suicide bombing is reported to have been detonated in Kobane.

Rumours of bomb-laden truck has entered Aligor as well.

At least 28 dead in suspected ISIL suicide bombing in Turkey's border with Syria

An explosion has killed at least 28 in a municipal culture center in the southeastern province of Şanlıurfa’s Suruç district, as scores of people have been hospitalized.

"We are concerned that the number of death will increase. The perpetrators will soon be found and put on trial," Turkey's interior minister said in a statement on July 20.

Şanlıurfa Governor İzzettin Küçük has said the death toll has risen to 28, while around 100 people are injured.

There is speculation that the blast was caused by a 18-year-old female suicide bomber from the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

At least 300 members of the Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF) were staying at the Amara Culture Center as part of a summer expedition to help rebuild Kobane, which lies directly across the border from Suruç.

The culture center, which is run by the Suruç Municipality under the control of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP), frequently hosts visiting journalists and volunteers who work with refugees from Kobane, which had been repeatedly attacked by ISIL in the past months.

Upon his arrival in Nicosia for an official visit, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan called authorities, including Şanlıurfa Gov. İzzettin Küçük, in order to get further information concerning the attack, sources from the presidential office told the state-run Anadolu Agency.

The Health Ministry has dispatched 33 land ambulances, each with three paramedic staff on board and a helicopter ambulance.

According to a statement by the ministry, there is no blood stock shortage, while intensive care units at nearby provinces have been instructed to remain on alert.

Deputy Prime Minister Yalçın Akdoğan was the first senior government official to make a public statement concerning the attack, harshly condemning it in messages posted to his Twitter account.

“These terrorist attacks aimed at Turkey, our nation’s unity and integrity and serenity and peace will not achieve their goal in any way,” Akdoğan said, vowing that “the state, the government and the nation” will foil the attacks.

“No terrorist attack can bring Turkey down and hit our unity and integrity. We will foil this dirty plot with common sense,” he said.

Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu joined the condemnations of the deadly attack via his Twitter account.

“The treacherous attack in Suruç has burned our hearts. The grief of losing our young children is unspeakable. I condemn terror and those who support it,” said Kılıçdaroğlu.

In addition to the members of the Cabinet, a technical delegation by the Interior Ministry and a delegation from the Republican People’s Party (CHP) also left for the region.

Meanwhile, a crisis desk chaired by Prime Ministry Undersecretary Kemal Madenoğlu has been regularly briefing Davutoğlu, said news reports.

Kadir Ergün, an eyewitness, told CNNTürk that he was 100 meters away from the explosion. "It is hard to describe it with words. Blood donations are urgently needed. The people of Suruç are now called to donate blood," he added.

İsmail Kaplan, the HDP's deputy head in Suruç district, told journalists that a simultaneous suicide bombing hit the town center of Kobane, too. Speaking to daily Hürriyet, security sources in Ankara have confirmed this claim.

"If it is Daesh [ISIL], it will not stay in Suruç. Very soon we could end up like Syria," said Muhsin Kızılkaya, a deputy from the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).

The hashtag #SuruçtaKatliamVar (There is a massacre in Suruç) entered the worldwide trending topics list on Twitter soon after the explosion.

"It's a big massacre. The probability of a suicide bomber is very high," HDP deputy Leyla Güven told Habertürk. "Suspect information has been provided related to the number of deaths. Some say that everyone in the group died."

    From Danish Kurdish activists:

Apparently the Association of Young Socialists held a press conference about how they would aid the reconstruction of Kobane when the suicide bomber detonated his/hers bomb.

More than 50 in Suruc dead according to HDP.

Suruc is about 6 kilometers from Kobane on the Turkish side of the border.

The funerals of some of the victims have already taken place, but many relatives are still awaiting news of their loved ones.

A suspect has been identified in the suicide bomb attack that killed 32 young activists in Turkey, the country's prime minister has said. Ahmet Davutoglu, who is due to visit the scene of the blast in Suruc near the Syrian border, said the suspect's international and domestic links were being investigated. He said there was a "high probability" the Islamic State group was to blame.

    Quote from: Juan Cole
What was at first announced as a new Turkish turn toward attacks on Daesh (ISIS, ISIL) on Friday has quickly become largely a campaign against Kurds instead. It is being alleged that the Turkish Air Force launched dozens of strikes against bases of the Kurdistan Workers Party over the border in Iraq on Saturday, and just 4 against Daesh positions in Syria.
    ....
What is weird about the Turkish campaign against the Kurdish forces is that they have been the only really effective fighters against Daesh with the exception of Shiite militias in Iraq. If you were going to launch a campaign against Daesh, would you do it by damaging Daesh’s most effective foe on the ground?

Early on Sunday Turkish police in the capital of Ankara dispersed hundreds of Kurdish activists who gathered to protest the bombardments, and arrested 25. the headlines say something about the protesters not wanting the campaign against Daesh, but these were mostly Kurds and they weren’t demonstrating in favor of the beheaders. Turkey’s twin campaign has a propaganda element that the press is sometimes falling for.

Some 550 persons have been detained by Turkish police, including a prominent Salafi preacher suspected of ties to Daesh/ ISIL. But Kurdish activists maintain that a large number of the arrestees are not Daesh at all but just Kurdish Turks. In other words, the AKP government is taking advantage of its alleged turn against Daesh actually to crack down on the Kurds instead.
    ....
The HDP believes that the bombardment of PKK positions is an electoral ploy intended to whip up nationalist Turkish fervor in case there are snap elections because Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu of the center-right ruling Justice and Development Party could not put together a coalition with another party.

In Iraqi Kurdistan, the bombings put KRG President Massoud Barzani in a bind. He had sought better relations with Ankara after the rise of Daesh, Salafi Arab organization that relentlessly attacks Kurds. People are accusing him of letting Turkey bomb Kurdish territory, and President Erdogan said after a phone call with Barzani that the Kurdistan Regional Government leader approved of the bombardment of PKK positions. Barzani himself denied saying any such thing and he demanded that Turkey stop its aerial bombardment immediately. Barzani’s forces, the Peshmerga, and the PKK fighters had not gotten along until last summer, when they united against the depredations of Daesh. Barzani’s government is center-right whereas the PKK are leftists and former Communists.

The HDP theory is that Erdogan is doing all this to win the next parliamentary elections which could come as early as four months from now if coalition talks between the AKP and its rival, the Republican People’s Party (CHP) fail. I don’t know if that is true. I can’t actually see how AKP could improve its fortunes by mobilizing Turkish Kurds. Maybe AKP leaders are convinced they lost the last election, or didn’t get 51% of seats, because of low turnout among ethnic Turks?

In any case, sensible analysts agree that Erdogan’s decision to ruin the truce with the PKK is a fateful one, and that it could throw Turkey into disarray.

PKK and PJAK have been considered terrorist groups by the states for as long as I can remember, but come the fuck on.

We've been purposefully ignoring the enormous role the Kurds have had in resisting daesh, decided not to invite any representatives to the coalition on daesh several months ago in order to avoid granting them a sense of legitimacy, and now, of course, we're siding with Turkey, because daesh isn't a real threat to America right now, and when the dust settles and everything's cool again, we're going to get more from Turkey than a relationship with the Kurds. We're glad to use them, and we will be glad to see them right back in the boat they started in after it's done.

So basically the US are dumping their Kurdish allies under the nearest bus because Turkey is a more powerful ally?

Maybe the Kurds should blow a few things up in Riyadh, just for the hell of it.

Pretty much. As far as I can tell, "no friends but the mountains" is incredibly accurate. After daesh is through, the Kurds will go back to being nothing to us (although there have long been whispers of at least PJAK receiving supplies from the states, but who knows), and everyone who finds them to be a thorn in their sides will be more promising allies to us (or at least people we'd like to keep the peace with more) than a collection of militant groups and people in villages in Kurdistan, or minorities who have no power in the neighboring countries.

I've hoped that things would start to change with social activism from Kurds in other countries. When we think of Kurds, a lot of us here think of the fighters, which is tricky. Militants aren't always sympathetic figures, and there's no such thing as a military that has never crossed the line into cruelty before. But more than before that seems so far down the line,  and in the meantime it's been horrible to see so many so willing to see these people throw themselves at daesh and, like before, appreciate those efforts in secret if at all. But not surprising.

After the attack that killed 28 people, the PKK responded by killing two Turkish policemen who they accused of collaborating with IS, to which Turkey responds by airstrikes.

AKP calls to shut down HDP. HDP's vote gain had blocked AKP from single-party gov't + Erdogan executive president.

After AKP, now, ultra-nationalist MHP leader in Turkey also calls for shutting down HDP (13% of the vote).

Turkey's electoral system skewed. In 2002, AKP got 2/3 deputies with 1/3 vote. Some parties failed (unusually high) 10% electoral threshold.

Turkey's electoral system is legacy of 1980 coup. It's meant to keep out challengers, new parties, minorities and reward few big parties.

In 13 years in power, AKP chose not to touch the 10 percent electoral threshold from coup era. It always benefited. Until... last election.

Last election, HDP managed to pass this 10% threshold, and gain a few percent votes from ex-AKP voters. Result=no single-party AKP gov't.

Now, as Turkey struggles to form a government & potential another election around the corner, high-level AKP folks calling to shut down HDP.
