  • All about alcohol (beer, wine, whiskey, vodka etc.)!!!
     OP - January 26, 2015, 01:17 PM

I have never drank or tasted alcoholic drink. I am often curious of how it feels while drinking it. I have been searching about types of alcohol ever since I left Sunni Islam and became a Quranist.

How many of you (especially ex-Muslims) have tasted alcohol? What are your favourite types and brands? POST THEM HERE!

So far, the ones that I want to taste the most are:
    Chocolate liqueur
    Mead (a.k.a honey wine)
    Crème de menthe

I can't drink right now, or either I will be arrested by religious authority or my parents will beat the crap outta me.

I can't stand red wine. I can drink white if there's nothing else.

There are types of wheat beers that I can drink, but mostly I find the whole thing quite repulsive.

My default drink is rum and coke, but if possible, I'm very fond of pina coladas and other type of sugary cocktails.

I only drink when I'm abroad, though, which is three to four times a year.

Well, when you drink the first time you should probably taste a cocktail. Alcohol doesn't taste good, so you need to get used to it. A bit like smoking. That's why drinks are often mixed with Cola or Juice.

When I was a teenager I couldn't drink beer for example. But now I really like it.

I think it is a good thing in Islam that they don't consume alcohol. It causes so much violence, aggression, stupidity and argument. (Alcohol, that is)

If you want something sickeningly sweet, go for a kosher wine. They're almost all boiled, so they're more concentrated than other wines and also less alcoholic. The reason they're boiled is because Jews aren't allowed to drink from any batch of wine that has been offered in any part to any other god, and somehow they take that to mean they can't drink wine that has been handled by someone who isn't Jewish, which is weird. But if they boil the wine, it stops being considered wine. It's stupid, really. Probably it was done to make it taste bad; it seems like the goal of most Jewish cooking is to make perfectly decent food taste bad.

Just be cautious. Alcohol can bring out the worst in us; it's an ongoing joke in the southern states of the US that the most common last words are "hold mah beer an' watch THIS".

Yeah I so agree with that too. Even before I converted to Islam, I never got drunk around other people. I would have a glass, maybe, tops. Because I didn't want to have my inhibitions lowered to the point that I did something against my better judgement. Also, ladies especially, if you're going to go drinking in public, watch your glass at all times and go with friends you trust--at least one of whom should remain sober.

    (not ex muslim)
The first time I was drunk (18) a guy in my class who looked old enough to buy alcohol took orders and since I couldn't tell him I hadn't got a clue about these things I just said, "I just want a quarter bottle of vodka, I don't wanna get too drunk"...
Ah, famous last words! I was called "Mister puke" for the rest of that year.

I drink beer, wine, schnapps and absinthe... or whatever is the choice for the season. When it comes to drinks I tend to gravitate to the rum based ones like Mojito. Nowadays unfortunately many of my friends don't drink so I end up at parties with goddamn hippies. The kind who dance without being drunk.

    1. Don't drink with Finns or it will come at a cost.
    2. Under no circumstance will you drink with Russians (or persons from any other former Soviet state). Any way you look at it it will end up wrong.
    3. (girls) In a bar, drink beer from bottle, not tap.
    4. Don't underestimate the alcohol level in wine.
    5. Be extra super cautious on work related dinners/parties!
    6. It's also perfectly OK not to drink. But don't drop lines like "I don't drink, I get high on life", just say you don't like it.

I know an ex-muslim who is now a professional brewer/distiller. That's maybe overdoing it a bit.

You know personally I think drinking is a personal thing. A lot of ex muslims, because they not use to alcohol can not handle strong drink and prefer Ciders and cocktails, which is cool.

Obviously you need to be smart, by now I have tasted a lot of alcoholic drinks but over a wide period and I have yet to get proper drunk and don't really care too. Saying that I myself prefer the strong drinks, Beer, Scotch, Lagers, Red wine.

So drinking is a personal choice, my brother didn't enjoy the strong alcohol and the cocktails don't have much of an effect on him, so he didn't see the point of drinking.

I however enjoy the occasional drink.

But ye not drinking is obviously perfectly ok

Where is the benefit in taking mind altering, potentially addictive, physically damaging, drugs? That is what Alcohol is. No more, no less. Add to this the fact that for any newcomer to alcoholic beverages they virtually all taste like crap and it seems odd, to say the least. Drinking alcohol is to hide from reality. Can't relax of an evening? Learn how to. Can't socialise properly? Learn how to. Life is for living, not for hiding from in the bottom of a bottle.

I say this from the point of view of my 22 years service as a police officer during which time it must have been 80% at least of the offending behaviour and consequential human misery I dealt with was due to alcohol.

... Why do you seem to think that one can't just enjoy the buzz they get from a couple of drinks from time to time without experiencing dire consequences?  More importantly, why does your experience as a police office make you think that you can tell people what to do with their bodies and free time?

An interesting response. You would then, I assume, ask also why people can't just enjoy the buzz they get from a dose of heroin or amphetamine from time to time?

Neither am I telling people what to do with their bodies and free time. You want to risk wrecking your life taking a mind altering drug then knock yourself out. I am merely pointing out the potential consequences. I am also pointing out the weakness of a mind that requires drugs to function in a manner pleasing to it.

My experience as a police officer was mentioned not to 'tell people what to do' with anything. It was an observation of experience on pulling bodies out of cars driven by drunks, of telling people that their alcoholic relative had died alone, poisoned by their drug of choice, of more brutal domestics that I can possibly count, of endless fights and their consequential injuries, so much death and injury. All caused by this mind altering drug.

Honestly I don't see the harm of a drink or two responsibly, we are all adults and know how to act responsibly.

If you abusing alcohol then yes that's a concern, if you enjoy it occasionally and responsibly then you are entitled to that as a grown up adult.

Some people are aggressive when they drink. If you belong to this people you shouldn't drink. And I wouldn't compare heroin with alcohol. In contrast to hard drugs you need to drink a lot of alcohol regularly to get alcoholic.

    Quote
Kamala is a human with latent Inhuman heritage who's powers were activated by the Terrigen Bomb. Kamala is now a polymorph, which grants her the following abilities:

Morphogenitics: Kamala can stretch, deform, expand, or compress her entire body or parts thereof into any contiguous shape she can imagine for a variety of uses:

Elongation: Kamala can extend her limbs, torso, or neck to great distances.

Size Alteration: Kamala possesses the power to increase (or "enlarge") and decrease her size. This size alteration can be systemic (i.e. changing the size of her entire body) or isolated (i.e. increasing the size of her fist during hand-to-hand combat or elongating her legs to travel a long distance quickly).

Appearance Alteration (formerly):  Kamala possesses the power to alter her physical appearance including her hair and clothing,  and could even alter her appearance to enough to mimic inanimate objects. However, Ms. Marvel recently discovered she has lost this ability due to her healing factor reducing the elasticity of her cells.

Hmm I like everything about Kamala Khan.. including her good looks

Hmm SIZE AND SHAPE ALTERING., sounds good., so let me have a glass of wine with her.  More importantly now a days she apparently  is fighting with Islamophobic bus ads in  in AMARIKA..  So today's news says Islamophobic bus ads in US revamped with Marvel's Kamala Khan

It's not so much the problems with alcohol. I will say that the quantity of alcohol can be largely irrelevant to alcoholism. What's more important is that, like with drugs, you will never know you are an addict until you are one. I am quite content for people to make their own way to the grave in their own style.

No, the real problem for me is to wonder why people choose to consume a mind altering drug, i.e. alcohol at all in the first place. I choose to enjoy and experience reality in all it's glory. Part of the search for truth that comes with considering yourself a freethinking Zen Buddhist I suppose. I compare drinking alcohol with those people who I see walking in the countryside, apparently for pleasure, who have headphones firmly planted in their ears to cut off the sounds, or absence of sounds, of the countryside. .

Of course, there are the people who equate sobriety with dullness. The answer to that is to spend time in the company of drunks while you remain cold stone sober.

I think they drink to at least soften it to some degree. It's what alcohol does. It's a depressant. That doesn't mean it makes you unhappy. It means that it inhibits, or depresses, mental function.

Getting out, having a beer with friends is bad?

If you need to drink in order to be with those friends, or they need to drink in order to be with you, then quite possibly.

Yeah. I totally get what you mean. It’s like, I can’t understand why people swim. Don’t they know how many fatalities stem from drowning and water-related accidents every single year? And please don’t get me started on those weirdoes who drive cars! Mother Nature gave us two feet for a reason! It’s probably not even safe for human beings to travel at 40mph. Then, the next thing you know, you’re addicted to driving. Who knows what that might do to your kidneys??

From my perspective, anyone who is not enjoying life through exactly the same means that I find enjoyable must have some sort of mental deficiency. Sky divers, surfers, rock climbers, mitten knitters, don’t these people appreciate the unnecessary risks they are subjecting themselves to?
