Sabahu 'l-khayr (from my hemisphere). I'm the "zimrielproject" guy:

I put a lot of the midlength suras to 60-85 / 680-705. The Zubayri fitna and the fitna of `Abd al-Rahman being the main contexts.

I noticed my work being mentioned around here, especially by countjulian in the Religions and Gods forum under, er, I can't link, so I'll tell you: "Topic: Allah is an unpleasant character", reply 26. I wanted to discuss some things with the group. But this is the council for ex muslimin, which I'm not. I was born Episcopalian (which may or may not be an improvement).

(Feel like I'm violating a prime directive or something.)

Anyway, the comments made here seem to have sparked some sales, so, speaking selfishly, thanks for noticing. Also I've been checking this site for links to scholarly papers that I'd missed.

Sidenote: For those dealing with family problems because of doctrinal disagreements, this place seems as good a support-group as any. The posters here are a great bunch.

Welcome. I'm glad you stopped by!

Many of the posters here aren't ex-Muslim, so if you ever have anything to contribute to our discussions, we'd be more than happy to hear from you. Some of our most knowledgeable contributors have never been Muslim, either.

    Hi Zimriel,

    welcome  parrot

I found the page you mentioned. I saw all the books you reviewed on Amazon about Islam. May I ask what made aroused your interest in Islam?

Here is the link to the post of countjulian, who mentions your books:

ElToro : I was born to a half-Israeli mother, so I saw a lot of Islamic culture around her parents' house especially. Then we moved to Algeria (so don't try to talk to me in standard Arabic, the Algerians don't speak it either lol).

I think the Rushdie affair was the start of what got me thinking it was time to pay some real attention in this direction. I read Ibn Warraq's books in the 1990s. Then I actually started *understanding* those books in 2003, when "What The Koran Really Says" got out of publisher-hell and Amazon started selling it.

A lot has been written about the developments of Christianity and Judaism, but not much (that was good) about *Islam* up to 2003. So I figured I'd do the research that no-one else was (then) doing. Or at least, what I couldn't find anyone else doing - I spent a lot of time in libraries sifting through journals. [edit: I don't mean to say there wasn't good stuff, just that the good stuff was - then - very specialist; the closest I found to an overview was GR Hawting's "The First Dynasty of Islam" and this was for college grad students.]

Things are different now. The essay (footnote, really) "The Keys to the Garden are Swords" in House of War is a case in point. In 2012 nobody had thought to link the Doctrina Jacobi's comments about a prophet with keys to paradise, and a sword, with the hadith of "the keys to the garden are swords"; so I had to write my own essay. Meanwhile, or soon after, Sean Anthony wrote up a much more in-depth treatment of that very concept: "Muḥammad, the Keys to Paradise, and the Doctrina Iacobi" (pub. 2014).

Heh. Was she an Arab Israeli? I grew up Jewish in a Muslim neighborhood. That was....interesting...lol. Most of them were really sweet to me. Until my best friend's (Pakistani Muslims) family moved away, and I got suicidal and decided to commit suicide by provoking someone to kill me, so I started fights with the people I knew less. Got two Arab Muslims to pull a knife on me. Not excusing them, but it was as much my fault as it was theirs.

Then I got manic, became an Orthodox Jew, started actually studying the texts, moved in to an Orthodox Jewish community, and got disgusted by the racism in Jewish law and practice. I was being treated as a second class citizen by other Jews for not being raised in the "right kind" of family, and my affinity for Muslims who were also treated as second class citizens grew. So that eventually led to me accepting Islam when I got manic again. But now I've had my bipolar medicated consistently for over a year, and I am much more sane, and I'm looking at the world differently.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for I have a sonic screwdriver, a tricorder, and a Type 2 phaser.

Are your parents "Pieds Noirs" then? Do you still live there?

    Welcome  bunny
I had a quick look at your site. It looks great, and it appears you've spent a lot of time researching  Afro What made you interested in Islam? Do you have any formal education in Islam? I'm a never-Muslim from Australia but I've always been fascinated by Islam. Anyway, it's nice to have you on here  Smiley

    Welcome. parrot

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Welcome to the board Zimreal Smiley Although I have yet to read through any of your books totally, I am a chronic skimmer and have perused them many a time. Your Amazon reviews and essays were one of the main things that made me interested in Islamic origins. I am glad to have done my small part to boost your revenue from your books, they (and you) certainly deserve a wider reading audience Smiley Welcome to the boards and I look forward to many an interesting discussion with you on board Smiley
