I have a far-left friend on FB who has told me these drawings are racist. What do you guys think? I tend to disagree but I am white and don't want to let my privilege blind me:

the one on the top left says
"It's so hard to be loved by assholes."
    and that's Muhammad himself speaking
the one on the top right says
"The life of muhammad" and "the debut of a prophet"
the bottom left is a response to threats they got after the top left cartoon, it says "100 lashes if you don't die laughing!" and the final one is making fun of the situation in Egypt after the coup, an Islamist is cursing the quran for not stopping bullets

Because they make fun of Muslims and Islam I guess. This guy is ultra-far-left. I appreciate him when he talks of class struggle but he is way out there on a lot of shit, he support the DPRK, China and even Putin, in the last case just because it seems to piss off the US.

For making fun of Islam, no. Using exclusively exaggerated caricatures of people with gigantic curved noses and other features might be a different story, especially in some of the more tasteless comics I've seen kicking around the internet.

It's all about illogical anger with the U.S. It wasn't any different 25 years ago when I was active in my Trade Union. The far left "Socialist Worker Party" types used to support anyone that was against the U.S. Even, bizarrely, ultra right wing South American dictators. I suppose it's entirely in character if their descendants are supporting Islamic Extremists for the same reason. I did like them though, they were nice people and endless fun because they had no understanding of irony & sarcasm.

Do you think that any of these cross the line though? I think its quite clear that this publication holds a negative opinion of Muhammad, as it does with all religious figures. Certainly the artist would be within their limits to caricature in such a case.

Like Julian, I'm not exactly one to speak about where the line is. I just do know that I've found some (not these particular ones) to be very cringe-worthy, less when they're depicting Mohammad and more when it's just batches of Muslims they're commenting on, and could imagine why they might catch the accusation of being racist. But for criticizing Islam, never.

I prefer the Canard, France's other satirical weekly. Charlie Hebdo always seemed a bit crude, and this was long before Muslims were even on their radar.

But that's the house style. And the things they say need saying. More now than ever.

    Tacky done by Huffington post:

Muslims Around The World Condemn Charlie Hebdo Attack

Muslims in France and around the world banded together on Wednesday to strongly condemn the deadliest terror attack the country has seen in the past two decades.

Three masked gunmen stormed the Paris offices of Charlie Hebdo, a satirical magazine that has become notorious for its caricatures of the Prophet Muhammad. One of the men reportedly shouted “Allahu akbar” as they unleashed a barrage of bullets that left at least twelve dead.

Muslim leaders and activists immediately denounced the terrorists actions, reiterating the verse in the Quran that tells Muslims when one kills just one innocent person, it is as if he has killed all of humanity.

    Well. Click that verse...

A lot of "left-wingers" and Muslims support Putin because he is considered "anti-imperialist" against the interests of "teh West".

They totally ignore the 2nd Chechen war and him annexing Crimea  - which was "Muslim" until the 19th century, by the way - and Muslim Crimean tartars fleeing Russian aggression there because they feared for their life as they weren't considered "Russians" by the thugs there - the annexation totally in defiance of the agreement Russia and Ukraine made so Ukraine would hand over all its nuclear weapons to Russia and let them keep bases in Ukraine.

I'm pretty far left-wing politically both economically, socially and with regards to authorities but man there is a lot of people giving us a bad name by being utter shitheads by defending the undefendable.

    Cheesy

Well if read in the entirety the verse(s) actually say something else - which I think is kind of bold for Huffington Post to link to - mostly that they included 5:33 with the crucifixion and stuff. I have had Ahmadis (guess who? *cough*) wringing their hands over that without being able to condemn crucifixion as a punishment.

I'm convinced that many Muslims actually believe that - that that is their Islam. For them Islam means (a system for) social justice and fairness and being a good Muslim is being a good human and Muhammad was a great reformer sent by a benign god.

Perhaps my far-leftism is showing here Tongue

Yes many of them do think that, but just as many are wilfully disingenuous, and even those who do believe in the benign Muhammad are clouding the issue when clarity is needed. You can only be bewildered about how people are doing things bad while invested with authority by scripture and tradition and the example of Muhammad for so long without being part of the problem of silence over it

The less Muslims know of Islam the better human beings they are.

The full verses should be sent to every news agency out there. The verse isn't condemning the killing fo 'innocent people'. It justifies killing someone for 'spreading corruption'. What is the greatest corruption there is?

To deny Allah and His Messenger.
To besmirch Allah and His Messenger.

And the following verse goes on to depict the most barbaric and tortorous punishments only a sadist would commit on someone else: crucifixion and amputation.

Most Compassionate and Most Merciful my arse.

Like I said, these particular ones weren't the ones making me clutch my pearls, but I do understand why some people would consider many comics poking fun at Muslims racist, depending. But not because of the criticism of Islam, but because many of them represent Muslims as ridiculous exaggerations of people with features we in the West typically associate with looking "Middle Eastern" and then depicting them as barbarians and dirty and primitive and what have you.

If someone wanted to level that accusation at these cartoons, I'd at least be able to see where they are coming from, but if it's because, like countjulian suggested, they criticize Islam, I won't even entertain an accusation so absurd. It's simply not racism in any sense to criticize an idea.

Anyway, yes, like David mentioned, it's not the issue right now. That this was brought up in the immediate aftermath at all points to attempts to confuse and distract from the issue and shift the blame to some degree onto the cartoonists. I reckon I shouldn't have tried to answer it, considering.
