He should stick to stand-up and leave the important issues to us forumers.

Brand does raise some issues but to me he is a back seat driver. On Question Time recently he was asked if he has all these great ideas, why doesn't he stand for election. His reply was something along the lines of "Oh I don't want to become like the politicians"

This says a lot. He realises that politics is not an easy career to take, and that whatever policies you have, you are going to piss some portion of the population off, get criticised, vilified, insulted and have lots of disparaging cartoons made of you, and have to account for your screw ups and mistakes, and when it all goes wrong, you have to take it on the chin.

You cant please all the people all of the time. As some once quoted "politics is the art of compromise".

He wants to be popular and loved ......... and politics is not the career for that.

Idiots like Brand don't live in the world.

Politicians have to deal with people that both love and loathe them and must juggle policy ideas with vested interestes of various constituents.

Brand can just act like an arsehole and has done and profited from it very well. Fake ass Gnadhi wannabe.

Oh, the forumers don't put themselves on high a pedastal as Brand does.

I don't necessarily agree with Brand's views. I'm not sure I understand many of them enough to actually allow myself to nod in agreement towards them. But I do share his distaste for politicians.

Being a cynical, possibly jealous person, I feel that many politicians tend to do better for themselves and their own vested interests than they often do for the individual people that they represent. It is a cliche, but perhaps politics is indeed showbusiness for some who don't quite have the talent in order to excel in any other field, and is thus a path to the stardom that they crave deepdown? What's more, a quality that I tend to like in people is humility. But by putting yourself forward for politics, you are perhaps forsaking that humility... For these reasons, and more, I can see where Brand is kinda coming from on this.

Yes, I am not denying that that goes on. But I am sure that when you get into high government, and trying to organise major issues and concerns from people with varying needs and sometimes conflicting interests, and having to react to world events and circumstances out of your control, it cant be an easy ship to sail.

I am not saying they shouldn't be held to high scrutiny, and that things need to be fixed or amended, and he does have some points to make, but Brand seems to be saying, "the whole system and everyone in it is shit and we should kick em all out, I've got a much better system, but I want someone else to do it for me cos I don't wanna get the blame for when it goes wrong"........ which is not really practical or constructive, it is destructivist.

He's partially nuts, I agree. But he does have clout, and he seems to be evolving into a figurehead for a rather effective protest movement:

He means well. He doesn't have to do what he does.

Some of my friends were doing a whip-round for Kobane at a festival. Russell Brand was there and found out about it. He came to them, picked up a bucket and spent the day collecting donations.

His ideas are a bit simplistic and his new book was very disappointing, but he sincerely means well and wants to help people.

Yes, I agree Russell raises some good points and highlights some important issues, I applaud him for that. But rather than constructive criticism or practical solutions to such issues, (I haven't read his book but judging by some of his interviews), he seems to endorse a 'revolutionary' approach, where an 'evolutionary' approach may be more the order of the day.

I agree. That's why I left the Socialist Workers Party back in '96. Their hearts and minds are in the right place, but their ideas about revolution are flawed.

The future for British politics lies in the middle ground. Neither pure red (socialism) nor pure blue (capitalism), we just need to decide what shade of purple works best.

`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'
