Holy shit, that is marvellous! I had no idea so many people were into it that much they'd name their bands and releases after Erikson's stuff! And the whole Chain of Dogs sequence in Deadhouse Gates was pretty terrific…

I didn't either, until fairly recently I'm glad it gives the series more publicity. And yeah, the whole thing is pretty fucking epic! Coltaine

Riftwar Cycle by Raymond Feist. Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan. I started both series when I was younger but due to the slow pace in which new novels are released I still read both now. However some of the appeal has been lost as my tastes changed. After all both series started 20+ years ago. Other series I have read were already mentioned.

The Dungeons and Dragons series and it's spin offs are a great introduction to complex ideas and issue for children and young teenagers. So I recommend these books for those with kids.

Are they funny though? I recall often being amused by lines and fisticuffs in David Eddings' Belgariad series, though I can't recall any specific books.

Jordan use a very broad writing style so there are brief bursts, long developed, subtle, etc, forms of humour throughout the whole series. His characters are developed in a way in which we can relate to people we know. So if you have a friend that is often in funny situations, straight man, witty, etc, you find similar characteristics in the books. Riftwars is shorter which can be very limiting at times. Neither series is aimed at comedy but rather character development.

I recommend Eddings' series as well.
