  • How do you pronounce "Ibn" ?
     OP - May 24, 2014, 03:01 PM

The pronunciations that I know of are :  "eben", "i-bin", "aben" (Spanish Arabs) and "ibnah".

Which is the most appropriate to use, in your opinion?

    Thanks.

Well, it's a hamzat wasl that is pronounced if it comes at the beginning and merged with the previous letter if it comes in the middle. If it comes in the middle of names in a lineage, it is dropped from written form.

If it stands at the beginning, it is pronounced and written ibn (ابن), as in ibn 'Abbas.

If it comes in the middle of two names of a lineage (nasab), it is written بن (bin), but should technically still be pronounced connected to the name prior. I realize this probably makes no sense as I write it, so I'll try to give an example along with some phonetics.

For example, the name Muhammad bin Rashid should be written محمد بن راشد. Most accurately, it should be pronounced in conjunction with the tanween at the end of Muhammad(un), so "MuhammadunibnuRashidin"

Unless you are like a real scholar or Arabic grammar nazi, though, no one would ever really say it like that.

For all practical purposes, the name would be pronounced "Muhammad Bin Rashid."

I should have clarified that I was talking about "Ibn" standing at the beginning, e.g. "Son of Kathir".
    Thanks for the clarification  Smiley

Yep I understand now, foreign language structures aren't alien to me but Arabic has always irked me.

What triggered this question was a YouTube Video where the native Arabic speaker pronounced Ibn in a manner which I didn't understand, but your explanation has solved my problem.

If he said Ibna, it was likely in a mansub state, meaning it was likely in the form of an object maf'ool bih or some other form that could cause a word to take that state. As you likely know, the ending of words change in Arabic depending on what part of speech they take. Either that or the guy was just speaking sloppy Arabic.

OK. So he said "Tafseerubnukatheer" which is correct. The hamzat wasl at the beginning of "ibn" here gets merged with the dhamma of the raa in tafseer, so it becomes tafseeru-bnu katheer.

Basically, a hamzat wasl (ا) always gets merged with the sound of the letter that comes before it. In this case, the correct sound of the R in tafseer is dhamma (u) so the hamzat wasl adopts that sound. It's the same reason we say "Bismillah" and not Bismalllah" Allah has a hamzat wasl at the beginning of his name so it always takes the sound of whatever letter came before it.

    @HM

You must have an awesome memory if you remember all the nuances of arabic grammer even though you haven't used the language for years.

Or do you still use arabic (outside of CEMB and ex muslim stuff ) ?

HM was that a prophetic greeting? My ability to read Arabic atm is very bad, I'm aiming to change this soon.

Cheesy It's just what Muslim scholars typically say at the end of their talks/lessons. "Such, and may Allah shower his peace and blessings upon our prophet Muhammad." Seemed like the appropriate thing to say at the time. Grin

I heard that captndisguise the youtube guy who debunks dawah stuff is learning arabic.

All the power to him but I don't know how he got the willpower to learn a language for the sole purpose of deunking islam. I'd get bored with it in a few hours.

If I learn a new language it will be French. As part of the curriculm I already learnt it for years but opted out of classes in the beginning of highschool.

I love the Arabic language, always have, I am more motivated to learn it now than I ever was as a devout Muslim.

I don't know what you're talking about, the Queen rocks. The British people should consider themselves lucky to have a monarch and leader of such class and sophistication.

Why do people keep assuming I want to debate? Is it my way of writing?

I stated I loved Queen's English, and liked the Queen. I have no interest in arguing with people who don't. I'm not even British.

Not sure, I wasn't actually assuming that you want to debate - just stating that I'd prefer to avoid one atm as I'm working.
(I will generally insinuate a debate if I actually want to have one)

I'm from India, home to worst English accents you will ever hear. Though, I speak in an accent what you would call General American, with maybe a tinge of Indian-ness about it.
