  • How do we choose what is appropriate for women to wear?
     OP - March 30, 2014, 10:10 PM

I'm been thinking about this lately. So every time I see Somali girl fully covered I'm looking like 'wtf' (they're only practicing muslims in Finland), why would any culture make their women wear something like that. It's terrible for women and so oppressing.
I know you think the same, most of you that is. But how do we actually rationally defend our view that western clothing is better? Why aren't muslim cultures allowed to believe that hair, cleavage, hips, neck etc. are not to be shown to any man besides husband but then we think vagina, ass or breast aren't okay to be shown? How do we choose what is ok to be shown without being hypocrites?
Only thing that is easy to defend rationally is the face. Face is what maybe defines our physical appearance and face tells so much in communication. Not showing it alienates you from your own identity.
But can we also rationally criticize other clothing that veils everything besides the face?

Who said that vaginas, asses, and breasts weren’t ok to be shown?

Hmm I remember being born naked. This idea of clothing is new to me.

At least Finnish law. Assuming we're talking about social encounters. Of course in bedroom it's different.

Personally, vaginas, asses, and breasts don’t make me uncomfortable. In fact, I rather enjoy them.

I do too but I don't wish that everyone would just be naked everywhere. It's just not how I roll.

So, do you think that if all societies completely did away with all laws banning nudity you would notice much of a change?

In New York City you can go topless as a woman. I've been there plenty of times and I've never seen a single woman elect to.

I did see one man in his underwear and a cowboy hat, though.

This could actually spark a thought provoking discussion about the nature and source of social mores, and the ability of people or cultures to claim a moral high ground.

But not here. Abandon all hope Siunaa.  Cheesy

I'm mainly talking about social views and not necessarily laws. I'm not pleasant with seeing some females dressing trashy. I like cleavage, legs and so on, but so many seem to dress so trashy nowadays that I'm slightly bothered by it. But when I'm thinking that she looks like a cheap hooker I feel hypocrite for criticizing hijab, because how I exactly rationally define what's acceptable and what is oppressing?

Right, I only found out way after that he was known for that! My first time running into him I was completely unprepared. He was strummin' away at his guitar, not a care in the world.

My own 2 cents is that if you assume human rationality, there's no reason to have laws enforcing a particular dress code. However, such laws, or at the very least strong mores exist broadly across human civilizations to varying degrees. I think there might be something we could gather from such an obser....

Last time I was in Time Square I got a picture of a guy with a cardboard box on his head, fully decorated with requests for money to help him buy weed. When you go to snap his photo, he closes the front of the box with a flap that says something like, “no photographs without giving weed money, please.” Grin

Woah, what? You're saying that because I want people to show some class with dressing means I have problems?
I'm not talking about extreme but just some respect for own self when dressing.

Again, that sounds like a personal problem. I’m sure whoever was wearing the outfit in question did not have a problem with it. Why should your opinion regarding their outfit curtail their ability to wear it?

    And a bit off topic…

Holy crap! Just found this about the Time Square weed head box dude:

    Quote
More than six months ago, the Weed Man in a Box, or Weed Head to some, began wandering around the pedestrian plaza at 46th Street and Seventh Avenue, a cardboard box on his head and a sign over his chest, cajoling cash from tourists with a simple pitch: “I am the weed man. I’m too sexy for you to see me.”

As charming as this tactic may have been to some, his appearance rankled the other creative panhandlers of Times Square, who make their living not by donning Elmo suits or coating themselves with metallic paint, but by simply advertising their need for marijuana, beer or both on handwritten signs.

Busking being serious business in Midtown, long-simmering tensions between the box man and one of his rivals erupted into violence on Friday night, when the box man was said to have stabbed a competing panhandler, Wayne Semancik, five times in the head and chest with a pen.

I don't know if it really means that but to me if you're dressing like a cheap hooker/gigolo you look like you don't respect yourself, just if you're using those hiphop clothes like that:
or if you're using some leather like that: .
I'm thinking that if you voluntarily use clothes that make you look really bad and weird there's a chance you don't respect yourself. I'm not saying I have pricy clothes or Hugo Boss suit when I go to buy milk but I think looking good is respectful towards yourself and to others.

Is the bloke in this picture showing some class?

Do you think he suffers from a lack of self respect?

He's in a culture (I assume) where that's normal way of dressing and it's not way of looking bad there. That might be the freshest fashion in there and what not. If he's on the other hand some black guy in Bronx going to buy milk looking like that, then yes, I don't think he respects his physical being enough.
