Hello,

I am looking to make some educational history videos that can be uploaded on Youtube. If you have any experience in this then pelase PM me or reply ehre.

I want to know specifically about:

1) What camera to use. I want the videos to be in HD.

2) What editing software to use.

3) I want to use cartoons and animations (such as doodles). Which is best?

4) Are there any educational videos that you like?

5) I want it to look as professional as possible with plenty of 'CHIPPOW!. The primary audiance is teenagers who have low attention span. I don't want to sit there and talk to the camera.

6) A good site where I can use stock videos.

7) Any information on copyright laws vis-a-vis music?

I don't know much but I guess a general framework you could follow would be the youtube channels 'ASAPscience' and 'MinuteEarth/Physics'. I used to watch those when I was slightly younger, they were pretty good.

I'm thinking more in the style of crash course in history. But how would I go about it.

You'd think that people would be willing to help someone tyring to create free educational history resources.

It is a well observed fact that relying on camcorders for audio is self destructive. You need good audio in order to retain audience attention. There are many tutorials online which show you how to attach the zoom h1 to a camcorder so you can just search it on YouTube.

You may also need a program for audio cleaning purposes, in which case I recommend: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/

As Descent stated, the "MinutePhysics" style is quite simply great. People have short attention spans so you need to catch their attention ASAP.
Doodling is very good but you'll have to be extremely proficient at cartoon drawing and it is a laborious process, you wont be able to churn out quick videos like this.

An alternative to this which still retains the "doodle" feeling is paying a monthly fee for the following program, you can start a free trial to see if it is for you: http://www.videoscribe.co/

If you want to hand draw them, combine the camcorder I offered in (1) with a tripod. Position it over your shoulder and record yourself drawing. Please refer to my initial contention, this is deceptively hard and will limit the amount of videos you can produce in a specific period.

On the other hand, if you just want to make cool looking cartoons & use animations... you can use PowerPoint. PP is actually a very powerful tool when used correctly.
PP versions 2010 and above have a convert to WMV function so you can turn a PowerPoint into a video without too much hassle.
It's also quicker to make videos this way.

(4) Are there any educational videos that you like?

Minute Physics is cool, as is crash course & QualiaSoup.
It's not really about mirroring the style of someone else though, it should be about creating a style which you are comfortable with & doing your best to make it entertaining.

Here's a stupidly simple setup, and believe me... this guy helped me so much back when I was doing A levels.

All he does is point a camcorder toward himself & talk. Everyone is ready to sing his praises, the guy is an amazing teacher. It's more about how you present the subject as opposed to the programs which you use to create the video.

Refer to my previous answers. If people get bored listening to you, chances are that it isn't the cameras fault.

YouTube.
Just type in "Stock footage" and then proceed to download it. I like stealing stock footage from small channels who don't have the power to DMCA.
No one will be any the wiser

Yes darling, you should ensure that the music you are using is "royalty free".

The last link is my favourite, just make sure to let them know that your license usage is personal & there shall not be any copyright issues.

They get tons of notifications/emails, it's easy to miss a specific query. You have to be extremely persistent when pursuing a reply from a relatively popular channel.
