    Short version: Overall an oppressive institution, however contains some very progressive strands, who have been mostly marginalized by the papacy.

    She. And she was here before under another username and was much further to the right at that time. It appears she's trying to approach religion from a progressive perspective now. If people support the same sort of social issues I support, I don't give a flyin fuck how deep in denial they are about their religion. When it comes to individuals actions and results matter more than internally consistent belief systems. Organizations are a different matter however.

    Its social power in general. Discouraging birth control and condoms in poor, overpopulated areas with high AIDS rates is pretty fucked up, even if you don't have actual political power to stop the sale or distribution of condoms.

    Sad thing is it's the same with Sunni Islam and Protestant Christianity, but unfortunately those religions are too decentralized so oppression leads to splintering but not resistance or reform. A counter-Islamic revolution in Iran could pave the way for all the Shia community, but if a Sunni nation fights back against Islam, it's quickly isolated and overwhelmed (see: Afghanistan). Only extremely authoritarian and merciless measures can break decentralized religion (see: Albania).

    Am I evolving? It depends on how you look at it. I currently in the process of adopting Christian mysticism, however my beliefs on Hell have slightly changed, along with gay marriage and abortion in the political arena and exc. My right-winger tone has soften. Gotten away from what is seen in the media. I am the legalization of marijuana. I've read some of Ayn Rand's material. To make Q-Daffi I've read one book written by Karl Marx. The Communist Manifesto.

    As for me becoming an Atheist:

    We have a Pope saying atheists can be good people and gays can find god, we have muslims in London trying to be inclusive to women, LGBT, non muslims and move into the 21st century...am I in Narnia?
