    This guy is pretty much hated by lots of Muslims for being so outspoken. He's based in Oxford. This is his letter in the Evening Standard on Woolwich. What is good is that he names the Deobandi influence as pernicious. Its good because Deobandism doesn't get focussed on and named enough. It is influential in British Islam. Many of the 'moderate' Muslim organisations decrying extremism are Deobandi.

    +++++++++++

    British Muslims are being exposed to a poisonous theology from three major sources. The mullahs preach a primitive dichotomy between Muslims and unbelievers that extends to virtually every area of life. That message gets fed down to worshippers in mosques across the UK, then to impressionable minds in the madrasahs, the Muslim supplementary schools. This warped Wahhabi/Deobandi Islam is nothing but a blatant religio-cultural distortion derived not from the Koran but from manufactured religious sources like the alleged hadith sayings (compiled some 300 years after Mohammed’s death), the sharia — a concoction of medieval clerical opinion — and the fatwahs — dubious religious rulings. With no balancing alternative that you must be an effective stakeholder and become fully integrated into society, this conditioning furnishes the perfect gateway theology for misguided Muslims to become alienated and radicalised.

    The Government is making a big mistake in focusing on diversionary measures such as the “Snoopers’ Charter” rather than attacking toxic theology and religious indoctrination. Why does it continue to pour taxpayers’ money into organisations that endorse the dissemination of divisive propaganda?

    Academic specialists on Islam have the intellectual capacity to challenge the clergy’s binary division of the world — but many are fearful of being branded as heretics by the orthodox establishment. Sadly, much of British Islam is merely a giant echo chamber of Saudi ideology. For Islam in the UK to move forward, it needs a complete root and branch reform so that it becomes naturalised to this country while remaining faithful to authentic Koranic principles of cosmopolitan pluralism and peaceful co-existence.

    As an outsider who lived amongst UK Muslims and was married to a "moderate" Muslim for 6 years I can definitely proclaim that Islam as it is practiced by the majority of UK Muslims is very Saudi/Deobandi influenced. There is absolutely NO spurituality, just an obsessive focus on fiqh and a long list of dos and don'ts (mostly don'ts).

    Unfortunately, this poisonous brand of Islam is now starting to take hold here on the other side of the pond. I have some very good friends who are from Pakistan and who live in California and because they refuse to follow in the footsteps of the local Pakistani community and become more radical and devout they have pretty much cut themselves off from the rest of the community. My friend says they are a bunch of hypocrites and he wants nothing to do with them. My friends are practicing Muslims but are very open minded, especially for Pakistanis.

    It is my belief that if I had never gone to the UK I would still be a Muslim. The pressure on me to conform to a specific brand of Islam was nothing compared to the pressure I was under when I got married and moved to England.

    Atheism is a non-prophet organization.
