Every year the World Economic Forum produces a report on the Gender Gap in every country of the world, and gives each country a score and a rank:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Gender_Gap_Report

From wikipedia there is a map of the 2012 results (click on it to link to the corresponding color-coded legend):

The red and dark red areas are those with the lowest score in terms of gender equality. The grey areas are those where no data was available.

What strikes you immediately when you look at that image?

The 10 countries with the lowest score are:

    126  Egypt - 0.5975
    127  Iran - 0.5927
    128  Mali - 0.5842
    129  Morocco - 0.5833
    130  Côte d'Ivoire - 0.5785
    131  Saudi Arabia - 0.5731
    132  Syria - 0.5626
    133  Chad - 0.5594
    134  Pakistan - 0.5478
    135 Yemen - 0.4595

Every single one of those countries in the bottom 10 is Muslim majority except Côte d'Ivoire, in which Islam is still the largest single religion (just not majority)

Results are not surprising. What is surprising however is Pakistan ranking second lowest of inequality out of all the muslim countries. From my visits to pakistan it seemed it was better off for women than other muslim countries.

    Results are not surprising.

It is not surprising to us. But would it be surprising to Muslims?

If i was to post this on a Muslim forum, what would the Muslims say? Would they make excuses and say the data is misleading? Would they say that it is a Western conspiracy to make Muslim nations look bad? Or would they simply not care.

    131  Saudi Arabia - 0.5731

    133  Chad - 0.5594
    134  Pakistan - 0.5478
    135 Yemen - 0.4595

The argument could also be made that, almost in that exact order, those are the worst countries on earth period. Somalia is grayed out.

What strikes me from the data is that the usual leftist refrain that is all because of poverty is not at all supported by the data, yes poverty appears to have some influence, but there are plenty of dirt-poor countries in sub-Saharan Africa that are actually pretty high on the list. Nicaragua is very poor and it is at number 9! Meanwhile rich Islamic nations like Saudi Arabia and Qatar are down at the bottom of the list.

I lived in Saudi Arabia for over 4 years. I can not say that I ever saw the same woman twice. They are shadows. They all but do not exist. I can't imagine what it is like as a woman in that country.

I've visited two Muslim countries in my life so far; Pakistan and Morocco.  Morocco is at 129, better than Pakistan (but still not great) and I can say from my observations is that Pakistan is definitely more conservative than Morocco. You see more women out and about in Morocco and instead of riding sidesaddle on their husband's motorbike they are more likely to be riding their own.  Plus I have notices that North African women are much more assertive than their Pakistani counterparts and don't put up with as much bullshit as traditional Pakistani women do.

During my last visit to pakistan about 2 years ago I was still pretty much Muslim, it really didn't seem that bad through the lens of Islam. I think the main reaction of Muslims would first be outright denial of a problem, followed by use of the tu quoqou fallacy in bringing up the small cases of female abuse in western society. Then finally they will say it is the womans place in Islam to stay home and be obediant, which unfortunately they have a case for in Islam.

    Iraq is blank.

Let me fill people in then grin12

This is an abaya that you have to wear in najaf and karbala ("holy" cities). If you try walking near the holy sites without that + socks + any visible make up...guess what, you get stopped by the police. Yep, police.
Also, if the police misses the fact that you don't have socks on, there are women whose job it is to spot these things and they will make you go grab an abaya (the black cloak) or socks from a box. Or make you wash your make up off.

Funny story: in Karbala, my abaya just fell to my shoulders (I had a proper hijab and everything under it!) and this random man stops in front of me and goes "girl! your abaya! Put it back on!".

This is only for holy cities though. Baghdad and Basra, you can walk around without hijab, no one would look twice.

Oh yeah, in Iraq, it's perfectly normal for women to smoke! wacko

Have you seen those Muslim motivational pictures with niqab clad women? It's all good when they say it's a choice in Western countries, but when they say that about Muslim countries, they are flat out lying.

Nicaragua is very poor and it is at number 9!

I know Nicaragua well, and that's utter hogwash.

Nine places above the UK? Nah.

Ninety two places above Japan (where I live)? Nah.

These lists are so subjective that you can focus on their inconsistencies and ignore the important point they're trying to make. Bollocks, sorry.

Accepting an option you have been culturally allocated and socially coerced into accepting isn't really what I have in mind when I think "choice".

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

I've been racking my brain as to why Nicaragua is so high on the list, and all I can think of is that they have a new women's rights law that makes their testimony worth infinitely more than a man's.

Woman says man beat or raped her = man is guilty and goes directly to jail.

A crude way of tackling a macho culture where domestic violence is endemic.

When I used to teach all women’s classes, many of the women who wore niqab would take it off in front of me. They would be really friendly and interactive as though there were no barriers. The minute another male walked in though, they would all grab their shaila and put it over their faces and look straight down.

I felt kinda offended, like I didn’t count lol.

Well alot of female students like their profs and the fact that they were willing to take some layers off(salafi equivalent of taking off shirt and just wearing tanktop) to show off to you and talk meant they probably liked you.

That was totally a teacher/hot college girl porno waiting to happen.
