Holm should not be proud of her performance, it was embarrasing.... If not for the accidental KO, I'm not sure if the judges would've even be able to score the fight Grin

Didn't watch the match cos I don't care enough about women's mma but I just checked the highlights.

The KO didn't look accidental at all.  It was a fake - an advanced technique that elite strikers like Stephen Thompson (and now Holm) utilise effectively.  Check the subtle way in which her head drops to confuse her opponent. It works by changing the direction of the strike relative to the direction that the opponent anticipates it to land in.

Holly faked low with her body language and then went high for the head. The kick she threw was a variant of the 'Question Mark' kick.

All in all, that Brazilian looking chick got fucked nicely.

Accidental in the way that she did nothing for 2,5 rounds and then got lucky with a good kick while her opponent got too comfortable and too cocky for her own good. It was a shit fight and I'm never getting excited for a Holm fight ever again...

She didn't get lucky with a good kick, the events leading up to and including it were deliberate. It's no coincidence that the strike landed at the point where her opponent began to lower her head. The knockout was afforded to her by the time she took to read her opponent.

An extended feeling out process to understand the newbie was probably part of her game plan. Holly programmed that other woman to expect a low strike with telegraphed body shots, positioning etc., then landed a faked low-high kick for the win.

Basically, the difference in technical ability was loud and clear. Unlike her counterpart, Holly checked her temperament in the face of disgruntled expectations about a high octane fuckfest. It was very intelligent kickboxing and the win was well deserved.

Spectators aren't owed excitement from fighters.

Look at how that weird looking woman's head dips at 16 seconds in anticipation of the lower strike, only for her to walk into a headshot. Holm's opponent did the work for her.

Her opponent was her bitch. Seasoned strikers would've clocked the intention before it was too late.

Holly was given that fight because it was easy, no doubt. Holm is a very good striker. It was still a bad fight. I don't think Holly should be overly proud of it. But she did need a win, after the losses she had to go through. But losses can build character, unless you're Rousey...  Cry

I've been reading some very interesting things about the function and production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor. This could be the actual reason why some fighters have titanium chins.

I am not sure neurotrophic factors  give titanium chins to folks with  martial art training but  the subject of neurotrophic factors  are very interesting., they are  little proteins that helps multiplying/synthesizing neurons dear Qtian ..

so what is this titanium chin?  someone broke the   guy's jaw and titanium chin is inserted ? or  is it natural chins that are tough and are called titanium chin??

I'll get back to you soon with my thoughts on BDNF aiding the development of strong chins. I need to bunch them together as they are somewhat scattered atm.

Btw, a "strong chin" in MMA refers to the ability to withstand heavy shots.

Exactly, my point is to do with BDNF and exercise-induced neuroplasticity.

    I'll elaborate after my workout.

Okay. Cba to write properly so I'm just gonna surmise and summarise this shit.

    1. BDNF is produced during exercise

    2. The more endurance oriented the workout is, the more BDNF protein is produced for endurance maintenance

    3. The primary purpose of BDNF is the survival, promotion and differentiation of neurons

    4. Fighters that excel in endurance based regimes are able to call in more BDNF when it is needed for endogenous regeneration

    5. Humans are near the top of the animal kingdom when it comes to long distance running

    6. Compared to other animals, humans have big brains in relation to their mass

    7. The long distances our ancestors would have traversed in order to catch a prey would've demanded an increase in BDNF protein in order to maintain endurance, this also gave us denser brains

    8. Stress kills BDNF production. This is why high stress exercise like compound lifts produce less BDNF than long distance running

Overall, I think this explains why fighters like the Diaz brothers, who engage in tons of endurance based exercise and stress relief, have ridiculously strong chins.

Other factors such as genetics (cranium size) can be taken into account although small skulled fighters like Nate Diaz defy this explanation.
