    anyone on this forum ever had to legally change their name from a Muslim one back to their non-Muslim name?  we just had it changed back for the whole family.  it was a powerful experience

    how did your kids handle it?  any issues, weird comments from peers, school teachers, outsiders?

    I was born into a muslims family but I plan on legally dropping "Muhammad" as my middle name but I think that actually changing name would feel a bit weird for me.

    For me personalty a guy of Indian/Paki descent named "Richard" or "Smith" would just seem, a bit off....

    I do know a Malayalam Indian guy called Richard, and one called Maria, a name is a name.

    True but I've had this name for my whole life and identifying myself by any other name would seem alien to me.

    Your  name is your name. No need to change it.

    Were I very pretentious, I'd change my name from the Anglicised 'Parry' to the propah Welsh 'ap Harri'. But what's the point? We've been Parry for over 500 years.

    I'm looking forward to the day when there are huntin-shootin-fishin members of the British establishment called Aziz and Hassan. With time and without drama it will happen. After all, we've assimilated those pesky de Mowbrays and de Lisles, their names now just historical bookmarks.

    I was "Jaafer Kazim Kanda" for a couple of years from the age of 25. I had to change it legally in order to get married. It was a condition set by the inlaws. Couldn't fucking stand it because even as a convert I decided I would make a point not to change my name. I was Muslim for 5 years before pressure was put on me to change my name. My dad died while my name was Jaafer. I legally changed it back to the name he had given me and added his name legally as my middle name to make up for what I had done. My real name is Bharat Jagdish Kanda.

    I love my name. In fact, I didn't take my (non-muslim) husband's name, I merely hyphenated it to mine.

    I like hyphenated names - family history at a glance. They wouldn't let us do it in Japan, unfortunately.

    I don't get why women change their maiden names to their husbands after marriage. When and if I do get married i'll just tell my wife to keep her maiden name unless she really wants to change it.

    She will have her family history and I will have mine. Does't make sense for her to take on my family name when she doesn't identify with it.

    Husband never even said a word. He thinks it's entirely up to me. And I know it's an archaic tradition, but I still wanted to add his name to mine for various reasons. One of them being showing prospective employers that I have roots in their country and will not just take off after a month.

    Yeah in your case with the employers and stuff adding your husband's name sounds like a good idea.

    I retained my maiden name and never took my husband's name. If I had my papers for his country i would have had to be binti Abdullah, but they didn't like our marriage certificate so screw 'em. They missed out on our sons too so it's their loss.

    I've thought about changing my name back to my dads last name before he became a Muslim. My dad died when I was younger, so I feel it would bring me closer to who he was before he got swindled and duped by whoever sold him on the whole Islam thing. Plus, I don't feel honest calling myself an Abdul Rahman when I would loath the thought of being a slave to a God like Allah now. Changing it legally just seems like such a hassle though.

    And my name is so Arabic right now people still assume I am a Muslim, or at least partially middle eastern. It is way to long a story to tell to get people to understand how I am really just a black guy lol
