    The newer versions of IE (meaning 9 and 10) are actually pretty good. Javascript engine is still behind the others, but the rest isn't too bad.

    IE8 is pretty crappy, and anything before that is decomposing vulture shit.

    Chrome is a good one, although I'm still addicted to FF. IE users might also like Opera. The interface is similar.

    Well it is better under the hood. It will handle a lot of stuff that modern websites use, and will do it faster and more securely than IE8.

    TBH I am not that keen on the Chrome interface myself (which is why I don't use it). You can, if you want to, run Chrome guts inside IE8 wrapper by using this: http://www.google.com/chromeframe?quickenable=true

    That only works on sites which have the right tag for it (otherwise it just falls back to IE) but of course this illustrious site has said tag. parrot

    You could also try Opera, which looks a lot like IE8 but has much better performance: http://www.opera.com/

    The thing you should know about IE8 is that despite Microsoft's hype, it was five years out of date when it was released. Really.  yes

    Hey I just took a look at Chrome's options.

    Click the funny three horizontal bars icon at the upper right. Scroll down to Settings (fifth from the bottom). Click that sucker, then go to Appearance > Show Home button. Afro

    Also, once you get used to it you'll find Speed Dial really handy. That's the panel of website thumbs that shows when you open a new tab. Stack your most likely suspects up in that and they'll be ready whenever you want them. Ok, scratch that. Chrome doesn't do Speed Dial. Primitive POS. grin12

    Speed Dial is like this (screenshot of my home page on Firefox).

    Opera does a speed dial too, but it's way more primitive than the Firefox version.

    However, a really basic one you might like is this one:

    There's also this, which is handy if you want to adjust settings on the run (Like a saved passowrd or whatever).

    Chrome seriously needs speed dial (a proper one) instead of their basic pile of recent pages that you can't control.

    I always keep a few tabs open though, Facebook: CEMB, Chat, and Reddit. The bulk of my time is spent there, so I keep them open Tongue

    Yeah but I like having everything I want on speed dial. That's why I have it split into groups. Ferinstance, test sites and quick stuff handy testing stoff like browsershots and user agent lookups are in one bunch. HTML5 and a11y are in another.

    I also like having a groovy wallpaper when I open a group. It feels good. Puts a smile on my dial. yes That's why I use small thumbnails that are arranged to give a good scenic feel, and why there aren't so many crammed into each group that it's hard to find what I want. I know what groups things are in, and I can find them easily in any group. Works for me. Afro

    No, it just means your browsing history wont be saved in the cache. Wink

    ETA: Or more accurately, it will delete the browsing history for that session whenever you close the browser.

    Oi! Yer Nessness! I forgot one really handy thing about modern broswers. Any textarea (like the quick reply window) will have a little thingummy down in the bottom right corner. You can use this to click and drag the box for more space. Bloody useful at times. Try it. Afro

    Hey new browser idea.

    If you like Firefox customisation options but like Chrome's speed, try the 64 bit build of Pale Moon.

    I've just been giving it a test run. Even the 32 bit version is slightly faster than Firefox a lot of the time, but the 64 bit version is killer (like twice as fast on heavy pages).

    You can migrate Firefox profiles, including all add-ons and settings, in a few seconds with this gizmo: Pale Moon profile migration tool

    Note that some plug-ins wont work with the 64 bit version, but I've had no problems so far. See caveats here: Should I choose 32-bit or 64-bit?

    You can install both. I did, just for testing. Works fine. Afro

    I've been using it as my default browser since I made that post. I'm running the AdBlock Plus add-on anyway, so I don't see many ads on any site.

    It can also be used to register a Google account without a phone number.
    Reinstall Chrome and register through it, and you can just choose skip the phone number page which can't be done otherwise.
    But you have to set a backup mail address when you first log in or it will start asking you to give a phone number very soon.
    You can use one of those email providers that doesn’t ask for a phone number, like Yandex, as backup mail address.
