  • Neil Armstrong Has Died.
     OP - August 25, 2012, 07:45 PM

    Quote
Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, died Saturday, weeks after heart surgery and days after his 82nd birthday on Aug. 5.

Armstrong commanded the Apollo 11 spacecraft that landed on the moon on July 20, 1969, and he radioed back to Earth the historic news: "That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind."

He spent nearly three hours walking on the moon with fellow astronaut Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin.

I remember watching that landing live on the telly. I was 8 years old, and a bunch of us were over at the neighbours' place because they had the only tv in the street. It was an old banned-in-South-Africa tv: black and white. grin12

Bugger the conspiracy theorists. That landing was a great achievement. RIP. Smiley

So am I jealous of you, Os.   It gives me shivers to even watch the You Tube, anyone who was lucky enough to see the live show with all the excitement surrounding it is very fortunate indeed.

It gives me goosebumps whenever I watch In The Shadow of the Moon, near the beginning when Armstrong says at a press conference, "Tomorrow we, the crew of Apollo 11, are privileged to represent the United States in our first attempt to take Man to another heavenly body."

Humanity is so fortunate to have had Neil Armstrong. There were so many unknowns in that pioneering mission, and he showed he was the man for the job as he got the lander down from a perilous situation. He was always such a classy and intelligent guy in his public appearances. He must have been aware of the enormous duty on his shoulders both at the time of his lunar mission and the decades afterwards. NASA and mankind needed someone who had humility, a sense of duty and wouldn't become mired in controversy or go off the rails. He must have known that people would remember him for thousands of years, as long as civilization continues, and long after other events of our times are forgotten. He delivered everything mankind needed of him and more.

    RIP

Here is a not so well known colour video of him climbing down the ladder and taking those first steps on the moon from the 16mm camera inside the lunar module. After he says the famous words you can see him glance up at Buzz watching from the window. I bet they both had big smiles on their faces! It's the same camera which was later set to take a picture once per second or so and captured Neil and Buzz setting up of the flag which most people have seen.

We didn't have a telly in Nigeria, but I collected all the newspaper cuttings about it. There were loads, more even than for the Investiture of the Prince of Wales.

    I collected those too.

Hero gets thrown around a lot, but it falls short to describe the men of the Apollo 11 mission. They knew it might be a one way trip.

Nixon had a speech prepared. It might never have been used, but much of it is very fitting now:

    --oOo--

IN THE EVENT OF MOON DISASTER:

Fate has ordained that the men who went to the moon to explore in peace will stay on the moon to rest in peace.

These brave men, Neil Armstrong and Edwin Aldrin, know that there is no hope for their recovery. But they also know that there is hope for mankind in their sacrifice.

These two men are laying down their lives in mankind's most noble goal: the search for truth and understanding.

They will be mourned by their families and friends; they will be mourned by their nation; they will be mourned by the people of the world; they will be mourned by a Mother Earth that dared send two of her sons into the unknown.

In their exploration, they stirred the people of the world to feel as one; in their sacrifice, they bind more tightly the brotherhood of man.

In ancient days, men looked at stars and saw their heroes in the constellations. In modern times, we do much the same, but our heroes are epic men of flesh and blood.

Others will follow and surely find their way home. Man's search will not be denied. But these men were the first, and they will remain the foremost in our hearts.

For every human being who looks up at the moon in the nights to come will know that there is some corner of another world that is forever mankind.

PRIOR TO THE PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT: The president should telephone each of the widows-to-be.

AFTER THE PRESIDENT'S STATEMENT, at the point when NASA ends communications with the men: A clergyman should adopt the same procedure as a burial at sea, commending their souls to "the deepest of the deep," concluding with the Lord's Prayer."

    --oOo--

RIP Neil Armstrong. A true hero and pioneer.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

"At few other moments has one person become the fulcrum of such weighty imperatives — to win a famous victory for America and vindicate a vast investment of national treasure, to penetrate a hostile frontier, to master a new technology, to navigate a harrowing descent to the unknown — all in the glare of rapt global attention. By the time he landed in the Sea of Tranquility, the country boy from Ohio had already spent most of his adult life in jobs where intensity of focus and the threat of violent death were part of his daily routine. He was used to all of that. It was, instead, the loss of privacy that appalled him. He loved to fly, and he loved his country, and in the name of those passions he was willing to risk not only his hide but a piece of his soul.

Only a piece, however — a mere finger's worth — and no more. ... Those who know him say he is a smart and intensely private, even shy, man determined to live life on his own terms despite having floated down that ladder into the public domain. Whether as an astronaut, naval combat aviator, test pilot, civil servant, engineer, absent-minded professor, gentleman farmer, businessman, civic booster, amateur musician, husband or father, Neil Armstrong has followed his own code."

    This is fucking hilarious

    1) Neil armstrong said the earth is a hanging sphere
    2) He was "basically trying to say" that allah hung it
    3) He said that the earth was emitting radiations from Kabaa, then he posted it on the web for 21 days and then took it off (convinient, so it can't be checked, and I didn't know internet was available in 1979)
    4) Then they apparently reached Mars in the same trip and the radiation continued there too

Yeah an I am super ugly, I can't even beat my chest am too skinny and when I roaaar to attract women, they laugh at me, because it sounds like a girl screaming. I can't even attract any bitches!  Cry
