  • 'Foreign' film recommendations
     OP - May 30, 2012, 09:53 PM

Okay I need (yes NEEEED) some good to awesome non-english, non-desi films recommended to me. I'm talking Oldboy and Roberto Benigni level. I don't like really artsy/abstract stuff, personally, just really good story-telling and especially excellent acting. So, fire away.

Genres I personally like: comedy, suspense, action/adventure, sci-fi (but feel free to share your own favourite 'foreign' films, whatever genre they may be).

    Non-english, non-desi "foreign" films I can recommend:
    Oldboy (South Korean)
Life is Beautiful (and anything by Roberto Benigni)
    8 Femmes
    The city of lost children
    Three (German film, 2010)
    Persepolis

    Presepolis is amazing.

I'd recommend Let the Right One In (Swedish).

Anything by the French director Jacques Audiard

And lastly, his stone cold fucking MASTERPIECE (although I happen to think the other two are masterpieces too, especially The Beat That My Heart Skipped)

    Un Prophete / A Prophet

Untold Scandal, a wonderful Korean version of Liaisons Dangereuses.

Starring the eerily beautiful Lee Soh-Yeon.

Only on Youtube with Vietnamese(?) subtitles, alas.

Thanks for those French films, Billy - the only foreign language for which I don't need subtitles.

    Last Stop 174 (Rio 174)

Based on a true story, Last Stop 174 tells the stories of two boys, Alessandro and Sandro, orphans who drift into crime and bond in prison. The movie also chronicles the parallel saga of Alessandros religious mother, Marissa, searching for the infant son taken from her by the drug lord of the ghetto where she lived. The three stories intertwine and culminate in the violent and dramatic hijacking of city bus 174 on the busy streets of Rio

UP THE YANGTZE ( documentry, but it feels like a movie, it's that good of storytelling)

A luxury cruise boat motors up the Yangtze, navigating the mythic waterway known in China simply as "The River." In the biggest engineering endeavour since the Great Wall, China has set out to harness the Yangtze with the world's largest mega-dam.

Meanwhile at the river's edge Yu Shui says goodbye to her family and turns to face the future. From their small patch of land, her parents watch the young woman walk away, her belongings clutched in a plastic shopping bag. The waters are rising.

The Three Gorges Dam, gargantuan and hotly contested symbol of the Chinese economic miracle, provides the epic and unsettling backdrop for Up the Yangtze, a dramatic and disquieting feature documentary on life inside the 21st century Chinese dream.

Stunningly photographed and beautifully composed, Up the Yangtze juxtaposes the poignant and sharply observed details of Yu Shui's story against the monumental and ominous forces at work all around her.

Among the two million losing their livelihood to the dam, the Yu family must send their daughter off to work. In a bitter irony she's been hired by Farewell Cruises, part of the strange apocalyptic tourist trade that thrives along the river, offering a final glimpse of a legendary world before it disappears forever.

    Intacto ( Thriller) ( Spain)

The protagonist has the ability to steal other people's luck. He uses it in a game of luck against others who have the 'gift'

    Don't Tempt Me

Pretty good film, made me have the hots for Penelope Cruz, and pretty funny.

    The Sea Inside

The real-life story of Spaniard Ramon Sampedro, who fought a 30 year campaign in favor of euthanasia and his own right to die.

    Nueve Reinas ( 9 Queens)

The trailer is in Spanish but the movie is subtitled.  It's one of my favorites, partly because all the tricks they pull in the movie I've seen in real life.

Early one morning, Marcos observes Juan successfully pulling off a bill-changing scam on a cashier, and then getting caught as he attempts to pull the same trick on the next shift. Marcos steps in, claiming to be a policeman, and drags Juan out of the store. Once they are back on the street, Marcos reveals himself to be a fellow swindler with a game of much higher stakes in mind, and he invites Juan to be his partner in crime. A once-in-a-lifetime scheme seemingly falls into their laps - an old-time con man enlists them to sell a forged set of extremely valuable rare stamps, The Nine Queens. Argentina, 2000, Thriller, Comedy

    Watched this the other day:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjTkXGRhy9w

Was totally dragged into the movie within 5 minutes.

I have a routine to movies, I roll my joint whilst the credits go up, and then I pause the movie and go make a hot cup of tea/chocolate/horlicks and then come back to carry the movie on.

However this film was so good I rolled my joint and then didn't move to smoke it or get my cuppa until half way through the movie.

Man I didn't even recline, I was just so absorbed in the movie I was sitting up in the same position through the first half.

It's so good, the acting is so real, the storyline is just amazing and the director deserves his awards.   yes

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

That was pretty good. It points out a lot of the 'grey' areas in life that dont necessarily conform to any specific religious or even any specific moral principle.

Kung Fu Hustle-very underrated movie, a real treat (comedy/action+scifi)

Kite Runner (I'm guessing you've seen it)

Quand j'étais chanteur (when I was a singer)-I love Gerald Deperdeiu in any movie, but this one is tops, very underrated (romance/drama)

    Captain Abu Raed

To name a few-I don't watch too many foreign films so I can't recommend that many, sorry.
