I laugh in the face of back breaking work lol hah hah HAH  cool2

No seriously, after all the work I had to do in the house I reckon i am up to the job.  Plus its good for keeping active.

So the birds will really attack the seeds?

*make point of leaving cats in garden more often and stop feeling sorry for the mice and birds they catch

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

    Please post hotpants'n'wellies pic.

The birds will eat some, but not all. Throw more seed on bare patches once the rest has germinated. Doesn't take long. It's rather magicaal, actually.

Okay okay, so I know I SAID I'd send you pics of my tulips but honestly, I'm so lazy and I don't even care about them anymore. They're stupid.

SO HERE'S THE NEW THING! So I went to my friend's house and her entire PORCH was like SO FRAGRANT with this AMAZING SMELL and I asked her what it was, and she's like, "Honeysuckle", but it wasn't cuz I asked her mum and she said that it was lilac, and it was cuz I picked some and they smelled like heaven I SWEAR!

Anyway, so!!!! Can I plant lilacs this time of the year?

ALSOOOOO we have lilacs in our yard, apparently, but they don't smell as good as my friend's :( soo is that cuz they are getting too much sun?

And can you tell me more plants that smell as nice as lilacs? Not roses or something dumb like that, roses smell like barf. Like, ones that grow FAST. I don't want to wait 50 years for a jasmine tree to grow or something.

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rosemary smells really nice Smiley we have some of that back home. It's not a 'pretty flower' but the smell...mmm, makes me want to make some pot-pori out of it.

Jasmine isn't a tree. It's a vine, and it grows quite quickly in the right climate.

David, this is an awesome thread!

I just have a question on cyclamens, I bought one about 2 months ago and it was doing fine but then suddenly about 3 weeks ago all the leaves and flowers dropped off and I thought it had died. Before all the leaves died and the leaves and flowers died, I was watering it about once a week with 1/4 cup of water as a friend told me that if I watered it any more than that it would kill it.

After all the leaves and flowers died off, I moved it into the bathroom where it has more light, and have been watering it a teaspoon a day and since doing that more flowers have come out and are surviving but the leaves haven't come out, there is no new growth of leaves.

This is what it looks like now:

What am I doing wrong and how do I get it to become beautiful again?

Oh, should also mention that it's winter here, gets pretty cold on some days and other days it's warmer. I have the heater going at night and sometimes during the day if it's particularly cold. Could the weather be affecting it? I can't see how the heater could, as I've been having the heater on every night since I first bought the plant and it only started dying (really quickly) 'bout 3 weeks ago.

David, I have some azaleas in my garden that I need to move to another spot. When is the best time to do it? They're in full flower at the moment. Thanks.

Is it not time to move it to a bigger plant pot?

I'm not G on gardening at all, but my daughter's bean plant starting dying so I changed it to a bigger pot and then it started growing really well again as the roots could spread out more I guess, and then it started dying again because that pot became too small too.  But then I failed to go and get a new bigger plant pot and it completely died.  Thankfully daughter is the forgiving type.  Grin

Also, he's trying to take over your job by telling me garden-y stuff:

Which, admittedly, I had not known. What's that tree that looks like jasmine, and the white flowers fall off and it's soo pretty and smells nice too I think?

And also, when I say "grows quickly", I mean, like, within 3 months....

Tongue David is not the only person in the world who knows garden stuff. Nobody knows it all anyway.

I don't know which tree you mean. There are lots of trees and shrubs that have white flowers and smell nice. You should try to give more detail so people have a better idea. Smiley

Sorry Aunty Ossy. Umm...the flowers are kind of big, maybe the size of my palm. It only blooms like once a year. And the petals are shaped like real petals, not pointy or anything, just round...

:/ It's such a normal tree!! I think the leaves are dark green though. We used to have some outside our house(s) in Saudia, so..um...yeah. But I think I saw one here too.

....man, I suck at this. Sorry. :/

Gross, no. They're very simple looking flowers. Like, not rolled up in the middle or anything. They come from a tree.....um. Yeah Tongue I think I'll ask my mum, maybe she'll know what I'm talking about.

Also, now that I think about it, maybe they don't smell THAT nice, but they were pretty. Sorry.  lipsrsealed

Edit: Also, the edges of their petals are totally smooth. I think they have 5 petals.

Could be a magnolia, if it's a tree and not just a shrub. They fall to pieces as soon as you pick them.

    Is it deciduous or evergreen?

Umm...no idea. The leaves were on all year in Saudi, so evergreen I guess.

And OMG YES I just googled magnolia and they KINDA look like what I'm talking about! dance My mum isn't here right now, otherwise I'd ask her. Tongue Sorry!

There's oodles of things it could be. If you had a pic we could get an id easily. Could be Gardenia thunbergia (a very old one that forms a small tree), one of the Michelia cultivars, even a white hibiscus.

If it wasn't evergreen I'd guess at a frangipani (Plumeria). Those are usually thought of as tropical or sub-tropical, but in their original habitat they are xerophytes, and they have a close relative (Adenium) that is native to the Red Sea area.

OMG IT'S THE FRANGIPANI OMG THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!! dance dance I forgot that they were yellow in the middle.

I don't know why I thought it was evergreen. Tongue It's cool how you managed to figure it out even though I misinformed you. Tongue Sorry.

Oh yeah: the bad news. Frangis aren't fast growing. In fact they are reasonably slow, but they'll last a long time once established. I have several here that are about thirty years old and they are about 4-5 metres tall and 6-7 metres across.

Good news is that they are really easy to grow. All you need to do is grab a branch and stick it in the ground. I had a truck back into one of them and break a few bits of branch off. Tree still looks fine, and now I have half a dozen small ones too. grin12

They aren't dyed. Those are genuine colours resulting from cross breeding using natural genetic variation. Smiley

I like the white ones too, but some of the coloured ones are also cool.
