  • Tribal loyalty
     OP - April 21, 2012, 02:22 PM

When i debate muslims, there will usually be one or two that make a completely ludicrous claim such as 'Neil Armstrong converted to Islam', and when I deny this, they all stick up for each other, even though I know for a fact that some of them actually know that its not true.
They start calling me a liar, and a blind ignorant fool etc.

Is there something in the quran which tells them to not correct other Muslims?

No. They're just ignorant and probably just being defensive - confirmation bias.

    maybe this
3:102 And hold fast, all together by the rope which Allah (stretches out for you), and be not divided among yourselves

3:104 Be not like those who are divided amongst themselves and fall into disputations after receiving Clear signs; for them is a dreadful penalty.

My enemies enemy is my ally. They would stick up for them even if they don't believe in what the other is really saying just because they don't like you Tongue

It's a more generic thing than just islam telling to to be this way

    Well there is this hadith:

"Beauty is truth, truth beauty," - that is all

    I disagree on that, dustie.

It might be generic sometimes, but its almost coded and a part of the reactionary "brotherhood" which exists in Islam that a Muslim would stand up for another Muslim. This especially happens when a Non-Muslim is involved (or a Muslim from another sect).

Sure, I realise that, even I've been told to see fellow muslims as brother/sisters, but similarly you have nationalism and even racism, it's more like the title suggests a tendency for tribal mentality and I think it comes from the 'safety in numbers' and finding some common ground. So in that sense sure islam asks for it but fundamentally it's a general trait seen in all places and levels. Not that it can't be changed, changes make us progress of course, least they should do Tongue
