    They might look like trees on Mars, but they're not. Groups of dark brown streaks have been photographed by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter on melting pinkish sand dunes covered with light frost. The above image was taken in 2008 April near the North Pole of Mars. At that time, dark sand on the interior of Martian sand dunes became more and more visible as the spring Sun melted the lighter carbon dioxide ice. When occurring near the top of a dune, dark sand may cascade down the dune leaving dark surface streaks -- streaks that might appear at first to be trees standing in front of the lighter regions, but cast no shadows.     The Martian polar shot is seriously weird looking. It totally looks like the dark thingies are standing up vertically.

    Nothing too fancy but I took this with a little Nikon f65 film camera on Gili Motang Island in Indonesia. I left placed the camera on the sand on the beach and left the shutter open for 3 or 4 hours. I got back this image with star trails and the Milky Way.

    Wow that is frikkin amazing. Im so glad my one chance at life was as a human being and not like a slug or a sea otter. It is so awesome to be able to appreciate stuff like this!

    Is there a place where you can actually see a night sky like this or is this picture all enhanced.

    I always thought that images from Hubble was pure raw data until recently. I guess if they didn't change the filters we wouldn't be able to see anything though.

    I've seen skies like that. I remember the last time. I was out in the countryside. The last village was about 30 miles away. I got off my bike, pulled my helmet off, lit a cig and looked up at the sky. I could see the galaxy. It was so beautiful I almost wept.

    Hey this is cool. Radio telescope image from ALMA. This is an actual photograph (no artist's impression stuff) of a star 450 light years away. It's very young, around a million years or so, and still has its protoplanetary disc. The gaps in the disc are where planets are starting to form, and sweeping up material. This is probably the closest we'll ever get to a picture of our own solar system at the same age.
