Buddhism was the one religion I thought was truly a religion of peace.

    Not so it seems:

A new hardline Sinhalese Buddhist group in Sri Lanka has called for the abolition of the Muslim halal system of certifying foods and other goods. The Bodu Bala Sena, or Buddhist Strength Force, also said foreign propagators of religions should leave the country within a month... There have been several attacks on both mosques and Muslim-owned businesses as well as on Christian churches and the clergy...

I stuck around Loonwatch enough to read a tonne of bigotry stories regarding Buddhists. Maybe their religion/leader say peaceful stuff, but the non Western Buddhists are just as violent as the taliban. Seems like a stretch to say something like that doesn't it, but it's not even an exaggeration.

Atheist pages constantly post "inspirational" Buddhist stuff. *yawn*

Last I checked, the people at bare naked Islam were having an absolute field trip with the Buddhist killing of Muslims in Burma, cheering and congratulating, completely oblivious to the fact that they're cheering for the kind of violence that they oppose from Islam.

The Buddhist Sinhala monks were at the heart of the Sinhalese nationalism that was part of the civil war with the Tamils. Now that that conflict has ended, the same nationalism / Buddhist cadres seek new opponents and scapegoats.

Nah, I guess being a religion of peace is just the Jainism thing. Or at least I hope it is grin12.

I'd love to see the mental gymnastics they must be doing. How the hell can they reconcile this shit with the teachings of the Buddha?

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

I always liked the way the Zen monks in feudal Japan (who were notoriously martial) rationalised things. They figured they weren't killing anyone at all. It was their swords that were doing the killing, so that was ok with Teh Buddah. It was a Japanese inversion of the standard NRA line. Cheesy

These militant monks were at the frontline of the persecution of Tamils during the civil war. What happens to all that political power of influence after a war ends? How does it dissipate? It just gets turned on other people.

    I know right !

It's like these buddhists have to do mental gymnastics in order to commit violence where as

liberal muslims have to do mental gymnastics in order to NOT commit acts of violence.

In my opinion a life without curiosity is not a life worth living
