  • Accurate translation of Koran 4:34
     OP - March 18, 2012, 08:37 PM

What is the accurate translation of Koran 4:34. The part I want to know is specifically about beating of wives. The USC website gives three alternative translations:

    YUSUFALI: beat them (lightly)
    PICKTHAL: scourge them
    SHAKIR: beat them

Which of these is the most accurate? I would suspect that the Yusufali translation (that adds "lighty" in parenthesis) is simply a modern re-interpretation of the original meaning. But I would love to hear the opinion of a native or expert Arabic speaker.

Shakir's translation is the most accurate. The Arabic word used is the most common for the concept of physical assault, almost with exactly the same associations and nuances as the English word "beat". The context makes it clear that that is what is meant by the verse. The intensity of the beating is not specified, one way or another. Trying to find other meanings for the word (as some Sufis have) strikes me as disingenuous rationalization. To an Arabic speaker, it's pretty clear what the verse means.

read the commentaries and meaning will be clear ... lightly in brackets is not wrong but also not accurate , because from hadiths it is clear that don't beat them severely.....but it is not "light" beating.........you can slap her and beat her but don't leave mark and her bones should not be fractured [source tafseer-e-usmani (urdu) ]
