"The problem of the chronology of the Koran," Arabica 58 (2011), 477-502.  by  Gabriel Said Reynolds    University of Notre Dame

    Quote
    Abstract :

this study challenges the widespread scholarly assumption that the Qurān can only be properly understood when its suras are assigned to a chronological order based on the traditional biography of the Prophet. The first section of the study addresses the origins of this assumption, beginning with Islamic tradition and its reception in the XIXth century works of Gustav Weil and Yeodor Nöldeke. The second section involves a critique of more recent defenses of the idea of a Quranic chronology. The third and final section of the article illustrates the problem of this idea by way of a comparison with scholarship on the Psalms.

The Chronology of the Qurʾān:A Stylometric Research Program
    Quote
Using stylometry, I answer three related questions: First, how many authors does the Qurʾān have?

Second, is the basic textual unit a small fragment nor-mally no more than a few sentences long, or do many relatively large passages form stylistically coherent units?

Third, what is the relative order in which the passages of the Qurʾān were disseminated?

    Quote
n addition to establishing a relative chronology in seven phases, this essay demon-strates the stylistic unity of many large passages. It also shows that the Qurʾān has one author

So how many papers did he publish on doing that  stylometric analysis.. on books/manuscripts((other than that Quran ))to prove that he is really an expert of linguistic analysis  of ancient/medieval books/manuscripts?  and and if you carefully read through that 90 page paper .. his data graphs in that review   tells me that work is goofy dear Mahgraye .. but that is different matter

     Cheesy Cheesy  .

Yes.. yes.. Mahgraye.,  I do know quite bit about graphing the data ..and I  published more than 100 publications with  500 data graphs or so in peer reviewed publications ... but they are  all from basic sciences...

and ..and I AM NOT THE ONE WHO IS WRITING SUCH PUBLICATIONS....

just an example look at his paper again.,  say  Page -232 of it.,   there is graph in it     "verse length Vs % of verses"  on surah-77.,  surah-50.,   surah-21.,  surah-11., surh-12 and surah-13  .

what does it tell you??  does it tell you Quran has single author??   nonsense dear  Mahgraye ...nonsense.,

If it is in my field and If I review such publications  .. their  place will not be in journals...  lol...

Okay. I would appreciate if you write a more concise criticism of the graphs so I can incorporate into my own criticism.

what is  "Okay" dear Mahgraye??  it is NOT Okay...   Cheesy

Anyways.,    why would you want to do that??  why would you waste your time or  my time doing a   concise criticism  of that nonsense work when the basic theme of his work is to propagate

A). Quran has one author  B). Quran has so sophisticated linguistic structure  that it must have come from some super human / in-human  intelligence....

he starts his paper with ..

    Quote
"And a Koran We have divided, for thee to recite it to mankind at intervals, and We have sent it down successively. "

and ends with  a conclusion ..

    Quote
"In addition to establishing a relative chronology in seven phases, this essay demon-strates the stylistic unity of many large passages. It also shows that the Qurʾān has one author"

So he is basically "a faith head" and/or propagating "stories of Islam for faith heads"   through some publication in some Arabica Journal....((Arabica 58 (2011) 210-299)) analyzing a  "story/song/sonnet  book " of its time through statistical analysis  of rhyming  words in it..

why should you or me waste time on it ?  I  tell you what all he is telling me from that 90 page nonsense is ..

1). He knows how to read OOold Persian publications/books

    2). He knows Arabic language

3). He knows how to use statistical programs ..
      and

4). He knows how to write stories on story books in English

I am not even sure  he ever  read Quran with open mind and open heart or closed mind and closed heart ...lol...

So if you are in the field and trying to earn bread and butter.. researching/teaching or  writing publications on some ooold faith book/s it is open for you .. NOT FOR ME ..

his paper/review whatever is 8 year old.. people are moving on evn to question   the existence  of Mecca and Muhammad of Islam  and singing songs on "where is Mecca?  where is Madina and where is zam zam water"

Well if you are in the field publishing/teaching history of faiths you do have a point there dear Mahgraye   ...  To write that voluminous nonsense He obviously reading Quran in Arabic ( I HOPE HE DID THAT) and counting words in each verse of each surah ...

Radiocarbon analysis has dated the parchment on which the text is written to the period between AD 568 and 645 with 95.4% accuracy. The test was carried out in a laboratory at the University of Oxford. The result places the leaves close to the time of the Prophet Muhammad, who is generally thought to have lived between AD 570 and 632.

Q1).  How many of those old manuscripts of Quran we have and we know  THAT WERE WRITTEN/PUBLISHED are older than   1000 AD..  and which is the oldest one ?

Q2). What % of those written manuscripts resembles exactly same as the present book Quran that we have?

There are at least 5, however incomplete, 1st/7th-century manuscripts, and they include the following:

    1) DAM 01-27.1 (last half of the 1st/7th century CE—that is, between 650 and 685 CE)

    2) Arabe 328a-b and Marcel 18 (third quarter of the 1st/7th century CE—that is, between 671 and 695 CE)

    3) Arabe 328c and Mingana Islamic Arabic 1572a (end of the 1st/7th century and beginning of the 2nd/8th century CE)

    4) DAM 20-33.1 (during the reign of al-Walīd b. ʿAbd al-Malik [r. 705–715])

    5) Or. 2165 (end of the 1st/7th century and beginning of the 2nd/8th century CE)

    6) Codex Amrensis 1 (first half of the 2nd/8th century)

    7) Samarkand Codex (beginning of the 2nd/8th century CE)

    8) Cairo Codex (end of the first quarter of the 2nd/8th century CE)

    9) H.S. 44/32 (second quarter of the 2nd/8th century CE—that is, between 661 and 750 CE)

    M. Lamsiah, Makhṭūṭāt al-Qurʾān: madkhal li-dirāsat al-makhṭūṭāt al-qadīma, Canada, 2017, p. 82.

One should also mention the “Gotthelf Bergsträsser Archive”, which consisted of 154 microfilms of very old Koran codices.  Unbeknownst to most, these materials did not perish in the American bombardment during World War II but were in fact saved and stored in a secure location by a German Arabist, Anton Spitaler (1910–2003). Since 1990, these materials have been in the possession of German Angelika Neuwirth, co-founder of the Corpus Coranicum project. Only recently has Neuwirth published these microfilms. And if some of these materials are indeed ancient, one should also add them to our list of oldest Korans.

In 2001, the late S. Noja Noseda, professor of Arabic Language and Literature at the Università Cattolica in Milan, alongside François Déroche, a specialist of Arab manuscripts at the National Library of France, analyzed the contents of all hijazid manuscripts securely dated to the seventh century. By comparing the manuscripts to the King Fuʾād edition, they concluded that 83 % of the Koran is represented in those manuscripts. Note, however, that Noseda & Déroche did not include in their analysis Koran materials written on papyri, inscriptions, nor the famous Sanaa palimpsest (Sanaa, Inv. 01-27.1). Taking this into account, and considering a more recent analysis by islamic-awareness.org, the number given by Noseda & Déroche must be higher, somewhere around 90 %.

In conclusion, despite not having found (in the seventh century, yet) a complete codex, we can say with certainty based on our hijazid manuscripts, inscriptions, papyri, that at least 90 % (or 83 %, going Noseda & Déroche's outdated estimate) by of the Koran existed by the middle of the seventh century (the 650s).

Q1) None of Academics who are exploring Origins of Quran and History of Islam explored  published any article/reviews   in such a detail as that web site on that important subject?

Q2)   That is already 8 year old ..  and no one published anything on that subject since 2010??

I mean that should NOT be even a reference for academics I wonder why that uncritical article is so popular?? Clearly they have taken most of the data from other folks as I see many well known names in their Acknowledgements ..

Anyways  thanks for the same link .. I think you should work on a  review on that subject .. Any academic links  from Journals  on that subject??  I tell you  that is far better than that  90 page article of that guy Sadeghi   and his  stylometric analysis  of Quran..

The Qur’an Seminar Commentary Le Qur’an Seminar A Collaborative Study of 50 Qur’anic Passages Commentaire collaboratif  de 50 passages coraniques

    Quote
The present volume is the work of 25 scholars who participated in the 2012–13 Notre Dame Qurʾān Seminar. The Qurʾān Seminar scholars represent various specializations important to the study of the Qurʾān, including Arabic language, comparative Semitic linguistics, paleography, epigraphy, history, rhetorical theory, hermeneutics, and Biblical studies. The2012–13 Qurʾān Seminar project involved five conferences, each of which consisted of a series of ten sessions, with each session dedicated to a passage of  the Qurʾān. After those conferences the editors of this work solicited writ-ten commentaries from the Qurʾān Seminar scholars. Subsequently we narrowed those commentaries down, seeking to eliminate redundancy,to the number found in the present work. Alist in the opening section of this work (“Commentary Sections by Scholar”)indicates the passages for which each scholar has contributed a commentary

    by Annabel Keeler, Ali Keeler

A collection of the long-unavailable tafasir, or commentaries on the Qur'an, which help to properly explain and contextualize the revelation, this series aims to make leading exegetical works—in translation, unabridged, and faithful to the letter and meaning of the Arabic—widely available for study and research. The earliest surviving Sufi commentary on the Qur'an, this record is not only one of the few authenticated works in Tustari's name but is also a key source for understanding the mystical thought and teachings of this important and influential Sufi.

In addition to insights into the spiritual significance of almost 1,000 verses of the Qur'an, this commentary, presented in complete English translation for the first time, includes numerous references to traditions of the Prophet, explanations of the ethical and mystical dimensions of the religious life, stories of the prophets, and anecdotes about earlier mystics. Generously augmented with explanatory footnotes throughout, the book will provide readers with an invaluable introduction to the Sufi tradition of Qur'anic interpretation and acquaint them with spiritual doctrines fundamental to the later development of Sufism.

Dr Annabel Keeler:  Annabel obtained a BA in Persian from the School of Oriental and African Studies in London in 1981, after which she came to Cambridge to read for a PhD in Islamic Studies, the subject of her thesis being a 12th century Persian Sufi commentary on the Qur’an. In 2002, she became a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College, concurrently holding a Research Fellowship in Qur’anic Studies at the Institute of Ismaili Studies in London. She regularly assists with the teaching of classical Persian literature at the Faculty.

The Idea of Idolatry and  the Emergence of Islam  From Polemic to History...........  G. R. HAWTING

    Quote
According to the traditional accounts Islam was not born in the same way
    – not as a result of disputes among monotheists but from a confrontation with
real idolaters. Furthermore, whereas other major developments within
monotheism occurred in regions where that tradition of religion was rmly
established if not always completely dominant (Palestine, Iraq, northern
Europe and elsewhere), Islam is presented as having arisen in a remote region
which could be said to be on the periphery of the monotheistic world, if not
    quite outside it.

None of this is impossible but it does seem remarkable and is
a reason for suggesting that the traditional account might be questioned.  It
is a suggestion of the present work that as a religious system Islam should be
understood as the result of an intra-monotheist polemic, in a process similar
to that of the emergence of the other main divisions of monotheism.
    ..........

    good book to read

Angels, Ritual and Sacred Space in Islam  S. R. Bürge   institute of  lsmaili Studies, London

The idea of "sacred space" has been discussed frequently in the   study of religion, both the ways in which faith communities engage  with sacred space, as well as how different religions define and  authenticate their sacred spaces.

This article will look at the ways in  which Muslim sacred spaces are defined in Islam, looking particularly  at the way in which angels are used to confirm the sanctity of particular locations. It will look notions of sacred space in relation to  the Ka'ba and other places of prayer,  comparing Muslim ideas with those of Judaism, Christianity and other religious traditions.

great review on comparative narratives on  so called sacred places for faith heads in different faiths..
