Ex-Muslim photographers, rejoice: Darul Uloom Deoband have just forbidden photography.

    Quote
Mufti Abdul Qasim Nomani, Mohtamim (Vice-Chancellor) of Darul Uloom Deoband, said on phone, "Photography is un-Islamic. Muslims are not allowed to get their photos clicked unless it is for an identity card or for making a passport."

He said Islam does not permit video-taping of marriages or clicking of pictures to save as mementos for future generations.

When pointed out that Saudi Arabia, which follows the Wahabi school that aspires to return to the earliest fundamental sources of Islam, allows photography in the holiest of Islamic cities Mecca and beams live coverage through the year, Nomani said, "Let them do it. We do not allow it. Not everything they do is correct."

Nomani agreed with the fatwa -- a religious edict issued by Darul Ifta in Deoband -- regarding a query from an engineering graduate saying he was passionate about photography and wanted to pursue it as a career.

"Photography is unlawful and sin. Hadith (recorded Islamic tradition) warns sternly against it. Do not do this course. You should search any suitable job based on your engineering course," reads the fatwa posted on the school's website.

    Walking home this morning.

`But I don't want to go among mad people,' Alice remarked.
`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad.  You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

parrot parrot parrot parrot parrot parrot parrot

This poor bugger flew into one of my windows this morning. At first I thought he'd knackered himself, since he was upside down and not moving. He is now right side up, still not moving much, and apparently trying to figure out WTF is going on. This is better. grin12

His mate is looking a bit worried.

I'll call the wildlife rescue peeps if he doesn't get his act together fairly soon, but at the moment I'm just seeing if he'll be ok by himself. He's gradually starting to look more alert. I'd rather not freak him out more if I don't have to.

ETA: And although he has beautiful plumage he's not a Norwegian Blue. Also not dead. He's an Eastern Rosella (Platycercus eximius).

Ok, parrot is going to be fine. He (or she) is toddling about and nibbling on grass seeds. Still not flying anywhere, but seems fine. Also the one I thought was its mate is actually one of its offspring from this year's brood. You can tell that because it's still getting its adult plumage (duller colours around the head).

Got some better pix of it, which I'm just posting because this is Teh Official Crappy Amateur Photography Thread after all, so spamming it up with pix of parrotz seems appropriate. Parrotz are cool. Can't have too many parrotz.

As you can see, parrot is quite happy now and is munching dandelion seeds. It seems to have decided that since it landed arse up on the lawn, it might as well have breakfast while it was there. Quite sensible, really. Sort of like crashing your car into a cafe and figuring you might as well order a coffee. Smiley

(ETA: Has flown off now, so apparently flight control systems are back in operation)

You can speed up recovery in a bird that has crashed into a window by holding it upside down. With a proper grip, of course. I think for parrots you need gloves, too.

I think he was probably happier just being left to his own devices. If I ran into a window the last thing I'd want is some bugger holding me upside down. I have a feeling the "speeded up rcovery" is just the bird freaking out as soon as it's physically capable. Smiley

Yeah they're cute little buggers. I was going to mow the lawn yesterday morning, but it's probably a good thing I hadn't got around to it. The dandelion seeds came in handy. It's mowed now, so if any more of them take a dive they wont have breakfast waiting. grin12

Hey look what popped up on my fridge first thing this morning. I was going to get the milk out for my first cup of coffee (Caffeine akbar!) and when I opened the door of the fridge this bugger popped out. He'd been snuggled up between the fridge door and the freezer door. Probably gave him quite a fright. Smiley

Nah. Huntsmen only eat insects. Don't have a taste for humans. One reason I don't mind them in the house is because they only fang on things I don't want in the house anyway. It's sort of like the invertebrate version of keeping cats to control rodents.

I've discovered that pound shops sell colour film. This makes me happy. With that in mind, here are some photos of London by riverboat:

Technical details: Agfa Vista 400, Nikon FM2n/Nikkor 35mm f/2 at between f/8-11, shot at 1/250s or higher.

    Yes, I crop. Sue me.

And you actually know the technical details in an Official Crappy Amateur Photography Thread? FFS man.

Well, it was an all-manual film camera, so I'd have needed to wind the film on as well as set exposure and push the shutter button. And nobody wants to read an essay about that... or do they?

    London by riverboat:

    Best way to see it.

Go east from Embankment pier and it's old industry and new money. Go west, and it's willow-thicket eyots and herons. I love the contrast.

You're probably right - for me, this was a first, as I'd only ever gone across London by foot or by tube (and very occasional minicab) before. I took the boat from Greenwich to the London Eye, and quite liked it - I'll have to do the other end at some point.
